Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection.

Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be un-reachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection.
One of the most common errors encountered when working with a VPN is error 800, Unfortunately this error code doesn't tell you anything of why the connection is actually failing. If you encounter it, check the following:

    * Is your network firewall blocking VPN connections? Port 1723 must be opened and Protocol 47 must be enabled in the firewall configuration settings (make sure that any router/firewall in the VPN connection path is configured to allow protocol 47/GRE which commonly is referred to as PPTP pass through)
    * make sure you can reach the VPN server by using ping. Sometimes, poor connection can cause this issue too.
    * You may need to updated firmware on a router or firewall if other OS (win9x/nt/me/w2k) works except XP.
    * Make sure no other secure software blocks your access, for example, Norton secure software.
    * If your VPN running on a Windows RRAS with NAT enabled, you may want to check the NAT settings.
    * If you can establish the VPN from the desktop at home but not from the laptop. Make sure no security software like Microsoft OneCare software that blocks the GRE.
    * Sometimes server has too many clients already connected (VPN server connection limit exceeded)? The server administrator can check this, but it is not a common problem.

I am interested in your service. I have been a subscriber of findnot till a little while ago.
I would like to know more about your logging policy (findnot retains for 5 days) and TOS if you have.
    Thanks

Would really appreciate if you can help clarify some things for me.

How does openVNP differs from the services that you're offering in terms of security?

How susceptible is PPTP to snooping when a connection drops (I'm using HSDPA on the road)?

And finally as someone just asked in the above post, what are your TOS regarding privacy and network logs? Under what circumstances would you release such information to a third party?

    Thanks for your time.

I have a question. I am behind a strict firewall and proxy cache of my ISP. My ISP usually block domains,IPs and ports. For example, cpanel 2082, free e-mails like hotmail, yahoo and gmail, internetphone like Skype.

I am not sure which other ports already blocked. Though, I got a ADSL line at 128kbps. My question is:

"Can I use your service? If yes, how can I connect to your service" ?

    Thanks

The point to point tunneling protocol (PPTP) is not secure enough for some information security policies.

It's the nature of the MSCHAP V2 authentication, how it can be broken trivially by capture of the datastream, and how MPPE depends on the MSCHAP tokens for cryptographic keys. MPPE is also only 128-bit, reasonably straightforward to attack, and the keys used at each end are the same, which lowers the effort required to succeed. The obvious lack of two-factor authentication, instead relying on a single username and password, is also a risk. The increasing use of domestic wireless systems makes information capture more likely.

However, that doesn't mean people don't accept the risks. There are many corporations and individuals using PPTP with full knowledge of these risks. Some use mitigating controls, and some don't.

    Advantages of L2TP/IPSec Versus PPTP

The following is a list of the advantages of using L2TP/IPSec versus PPTP in Windows Server 2003:

    * IPSec ESP provides per-packet data origin authentication (proof that the data was sent by the authorized user), data integrity (proof that the data was not modified in transit), replay protection (prevention from resending a stream of captured packets), and data confidentiality (also known as encryption, which prevents captured packets from being interpreted without the encryption key). In contrast, PPTP provides only per-packet data confidentiality.
    * L2TP/IPSec connections provide stronger authentication by requiring both computer-level authentication through certificates and user-level authentication through a PPP authentication protocol.
    * In L2TP/IPSec, PPP packets exchanged during user-level authentication are never sent in an unencrypted form because the PPP connection process for L2TP/IPSec occurs after the IPSec security association is established. If intercepted, the PPP authentication exchange for some types of PPP authentication protocols can be used to perform offline dictionary attacks and determine user passwords. By encrypting the PPP authentication exchange, offline dictionary attacks are much more difficult, as the encrypted packets must first be successfully decrypted.
