I have to make a claim first, I suppose content management is probably the next better match to post this topic.

I would like to find out which of the 2 free-source forum is good.
    SMF or PHPBB?

    Thanks!

SMF is believed to be more secure than PHPBB.

I think the new PHPBB3 is great. I believe PHPBB has learnt from the problems of PHPBB2, the new PHPBB3 looks and perform great.

phpbb has many mods that can be installed and there are thousands of people that are familiar with it and so getting help is often very easy. I'm happy with phpbb

In SMF and PHPBB3 - I would go for SMF. As its more customisable and secure. Haven't actually tried PHPBB3 because of the time I had with PHPBB2.

Otherwise vB has always been my Favourite.

I'm only asking about free forums. Of course, I do know vBulletin is a great piece of software and definitely more secure. Nonetheless, this thread is only focusing on the comparison between these 2 free forum softwares.

There is no comparison between these two forums, both are completely different from each other, one is an eye candy easy to manage forum while the other is a secure and stable software.

phpBB's newest version has a layout that is much better designed that most other forum theme/layouts and it's about the simplest forum software to manage, but phpBB security has a reputation which will hurt the software for as long as it exists under the current name, every exploit that you can think of has happened to just about every phpBB forum user, really unstable software.

Simple Machines on the other hand is all about security, although it has been hacked many times. The fact that is more secured and been hacked less times as the rest of the free forum softwares should give you a bit of piece of mind. What I really don't like about SMF is its lack of modifications from the community, unlike phpBB's large userbase, SMF is simply lacking in community modification support, but if you are going to simply use the default SMF install, then knock yourself out, SMF is the winner.

May I also recommend Vanilla and MyBB?
Both are free to use and they have great community support, MyBB is more like a mix between phpBB and SMF while Vanilla is in its own category as a true Web 2.0 look and feel lightweight forum software.

nice site layout, but then the 'pop over' ad came on and I closed it

that is why I never use those types of ads, they are so annoying and scare away any users

strange, I went back there and got no popovers

maybe I made a mistake and had accidentally clicked on an ad that popped over, but I am sure that I had a popover when I was there before

sorry if it was my mistake
