Based on EXPERIENCE only, no speculations... how would you spend $5,000?

Buy an established website for 5K. And work on it. Or build your own site. Simple as that. If I wanted spend 5K, I Would probably just start a new site, Spend 1-2k building it (Coding / Design / Graphics / Etc), spend 2k Building links, and 1-2K buying Ads. (Banners / CPM / CPC / Etc).

Test the waters with 25 different ways to market the site. Spend a maximum of $100 on each, and then find out which 3 brought you the most revenue and spend the remaining $2500 on the top 3 promotional methods of those 25

Thanks for the kind words Cosmos, but our site is not a social networking site, i never even said it was. So Why are you bringing Tom into this. Besides all i asked for was marketing advice on a music site.

    Thanks bud!

my advice is not go with music site since if your site becomes lot famouse you would start having to deal with copyright issues

Good idea, but a lot of marketing methods don't scale very well. For example Google Adwords. With a small budget, you're probably bidding on tail terms, but when you ramp up spend you need to ramp up bids in order to receive clicks.

Actualy with 5k its possible to make good looking and pro designed website and make SEO. Solution is to use website templates. Some companies like TemplateMonster are also offering its customization and fee is much less then UNIQUE design sevices.
I'm using templates to build mine websites. Its easier and you dont have to be an expert to edit them if you have some skills that should be enough. Someone could tell that its not professional but its much cheaper.
    IMHO.

I Like the Vegas idea. Put it all on roulette. If you win, you'll get $160,000... And then if you let it ride and win again you'll get $5,120,000... And if you let it RIDGE AGAIN you'll get $163,840,000. Then if you let it ride one last time, you'll get $5,242,880,000!! (Assuming you bet on a single number on roulette). It's a solid investment.

I would first establish my site by making sure everything appeals to people. Second I would contact the cheif engineer at a local radio station and discuss a possible sponsorship so that you can accquire licenses for music. Also, you can spend $1500 into advertising it, maybe even run a few radio ads.

The likelyhood of getting everything you put into your site back is slim to none, unless you can happen to take over what Imeem and others have lost.

Bad Idea.....you can build tons of proxies for free and just submit them to a few toplists and just worry about hosting...doesnt cost that much....

I wouldnt spend the 5'gs.....just build some sites and work on them yourself...takes time...but well worth the effort...Most of the big sites now were started in a dorm room over a few beers and some weed.....
    thats all you need....
