i have a cars site and its ranked on 1st page of Google for some keywords. but these days i'm getting some 10-20 unique hits from some adult sites. but they don't have any link (to my site) on their pages. yet Google analytics shows visitor from those sites.
    is that possible?
does visitors from those sites affect my Google rankings?

Visits from the sites should not hurt. You only hurt site if you have links to them on your site.

It's mostly referer spamming, or a script looking for a signup page to spam. It happens alot on forums, the register.php will get 100's of hits a day.

Don't worry about it, you can use the IP Deny manager or .htaccess to block these referers.

It's some kind of spamming trick to try to get you to look at their porn page

I dont see how getting visitors from adult sites would worry anyone, that would be bizarre if google had a problem with your traffic coming from an adult site.

Even if they had a link to your site on theirs its not something that anyone can control.

I doubt if this is real human traffic. More likely it's robots disguised as humans.

Yes, you can block those referrers off but it would not do you harm by leaving them alone :)

Would you call bots good traffic?

Well let me tell you when you have a very popular website, these junk bots hammering signup pages at the rate of a couple a second can really start using server resources. Not to mention they skew genuine traffic statistics so i block them without thinking twice.
