Where to grow this site?

I've been running The Tech FAQ for so long that I can't really "see" the site anymore. I need some fresh perspectives.

I would like to add several hundred pages of new content to the site -- but for some reason I can't imagine what they would be.

I need to add either some new categories to the right menu or a new type of content to the top menu.

This site has grown so large that deciding what new content to add has become difficult!

I tried a forum and it was a terrible nightmare. Other than that, I'm open to any suggestions!

What do you think? What do people want?

    Downloads? Tests & quizzes?

Something similar to yahoo answers where visitors can post & reply to specific questions as well.

Reviews, reviews, reviews. The average Internet user uses the Internet for opinions. Bugger us webmasters - there are more of them than there are of us. :D

See, even you are asking for a form of review right now!

    Hello Will.Spencer

After reading through your request, I had a quick browse through your site to see what was happening.

I rather enjoy reading information on technology. As I am quite involved with technology on a daily basis.

My initial thoughts when I read your domain name on this thread was.... 'I never heard of this site. I wonder why?'

When I opened up your site.... I wasn't to sure if it was a valid site with so many 'google ads'.

This left me to wonder if the content is all your original content or is it copied. There aren't many images in the site to assist those who prefer images with their content. I'd say quite a bit of users appreciate relevant images with their content.

Maybe you could place your blog on the home page... this would add a good feel of having a first person presenting the site to everyone on an ongoing basis.

Just some of my own thoughts. I hope it helps.

    Respectfully,
    Lhlalyam

Did you take a look at his website at all? His content is unique - and the recent blog posts are already on the index page. His site is not flooded with ads at all, but it does not validate as it has the google search. Best of regards - make sure that you observe websites more carefully before placing reviews. :)

Sorry.... not to offend anyone with my reviews... it is only my opinion.... the reason I feel that there is many ads is because of what I have circled below.

When I do reviews... I seriously consider what I am writing... and it isn't in vain. I have also ran the url in copyscape... and it shows some information located on others sites.... this is my reason just for asking if it is original information... maybe it is... maybe it isn't .... I'm not sure... this would be for the site owner to decide...

I hope this clarifies any questions or comments.

    Much Respect,
    Lhlalyam

The ads aren't that bad. ;)

What page did you run through CopyScape?

Did you ever think about adding media?

I've been trying to talk you into doing that and look at new media as a new avenue - but you really like old school dont you? :D

There is a tiny section under the "Software" tab. It's a newer project. It will massively increase in size over the next month or two.

Oh yes! I has Cisco and Solaris certification quizzes online -- before a RAID array crash took them away.

That's something that may very well be worth rebuilding. IT people do love certifications! (even if they hate them...)

I tried that. It made me want to kill. That was the old forum.

I determined that I just don't have the patience for that anymore.

    Reviews of what?

We have 332 cell phone reviews online right now. :)

I dunno. The site gets 2M unique visitors a month -- but that's tiny drop in the bucket as far as web traffic is concerned.

The (current) purpose of the site is to generate revenue. The ads do quite a good job at that. :)

It's original. Very few articles are from elsewhere.

Some of the oldest content is pasted all over the Internet, because this web site started off as a Usenet FAQ.

True. We've been adding images slowly, but we've run into a serious issue. Most of our content is about highly theoretical topics where images are difficult to relate.

Check out the "Blog" tab at the top of the page or the "Recent Posts" section at the bottom of the pages. :)

Yes, in response to your suggestions, I created this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=594759 :)

Why not ask your visitors themselves what they want most through polls ?

ALso, I would love premium proxy listings on your proxy list. have been requesting you for a long long time but i guess u dont believe in selling :(

I wouldn't know what to put in the polls.

Usually, I just ask WordTracker what the users want. :D

I don't know why, but I just hate the idea of charging people.

I really think you need to think about that hybrid strategy i was talking about and also allow user interactivity like user blogs and user review spots.

Try a Social Network-ish approach and forget about the occasional spam - There's always spam everywhere.

Look at the total value which you inherit.

Look at the total hassle I'd inherit.

Man... I hate user generated content.

Can anyone think of another category or two which could/should be added to the right menu?

MP3 Players, Games, Websites - everything that is technically related.

    Will's a giv-a. :D

Last time Nathan tried talking him into that, no success. I think it is a little too off-topic, how about we both try talking him into game reviews? :p
