The additional space provided for ad copy. Funny this screen shot surfaces after Yahoo announced they are shortening their ads to 70 characters (on Jan 18)...just like AdWords ads
I think the 3 liners are CPM ads. Google still does those for bigger accounts. I've seen them in the past, but they are less and less frequent.
Isn't that screen shot of a Google results page? Unless I completely missed something you can't run CPM ads on Google results pages, only on sites that are in the content network. I run quite a few cpm campaigns too and have never seen an option to extend my ad copy.
I know of at least 1 advertiser who ran CPM ads in google SERPs (as of a year ago). I haven't asked him about it in a long time, though. I know it used to be possible for people who did a ton of adwords money (around 6 digits/month or something).
Wonder if that was a test that G ultimately decided against. I guess the bigger question is why would anyone want to have a CPM ad on Google serps?
It very well could be, that once google went to CPC instead of CPM a few years ago, they let big spenders keep their CPM ads up before switching them over? I dunno. CPM ads always sucked for me and I hated adwords when it used em. If you are above the SERPs (instead of besides), and the CTR is high enough, it could be a better idea to have CPM instead of CPC ads there (for the advertiser, at least). When my adwords run on top of SERPs, I run about 20% CTR. i pay about 30 cents/click. Given the right CPM, I'd give it a go.
How would you target CPM on Google serps? If you're targeting by keyword wouldn't it make more sense to follow the CPC model? Running untargeted CPM ads on Google would be a disaster imo. I just can't see Google running CPM ads on their serp pages. That would be a direct contradiction to everything they've done (quality score, landing page being a factor, etc) to try and make AdWords ads "more relevant".
Remember, adwords started out as CPM. You still picked the words you wanted to show for. They weren't untargeted.
No I think its probably something that google is testing. That appears sometimes and other times it doesn't. I'm kinda curious how they decide who gets the 3 line ad - someone has to contact that advertiser to say - hey want 3 lines on google instead of 2?
My thoughts exactly - there's no space in the current interface (not mine anyway) to add a third line. Oh well, for me shorter copy has always worked better anyway. The more I write the less people listen
You should send it to Google. Maybe there was a system error and the advertiser got to put in 3 lines without Google declining it!?
Spotted a four line test, screen capture at http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/003160.html How nuts!
