You're gonna want to make sure that the ads match your page. the background color of the ads should match your pages background. Also the link color of the ads should match your links. You may already know this. Put the ads in between the spots on pages where the readers are focused on. such as in between paragraphs. don't cover your whole page with ads and scare the visitors away though!
You are going to want the ads to be in a prominent position. If they are on the sides then the CTR is naturally going to be slightly lower.
Make sure you don't have too many ads on your pages. The ads should be in the same color scheme as the rest of the site so your pages don't look to overwhelming. Make sure you update your website content to get better ranking in search engines and to drive visitors to come back to visit your site. You may also want to try doing a monthly newletter. Build your content around the finds, find places where you think visitors would more than likely click an ad.
For the type of adsense ads to use, try mainly using rectangles/squares and wide skyscrapers. Try placing adsense ads within the content of your page.
Make sure your ads blend well. Using Adsense, create channels so you can track the performance of each unit. Test each ad unit out for a while, then check the results in your channels. Keep the ones that did well, and ditch the ones that didn't!
This is risky. I tried this and the ads would appear in every post. I have 10 posts in my page and adsence allows only 3 skyscraper per page. The rest of the post had 'bad request' on it and it looked really bad. I advice not to go for it. There is a risk getting banned from google also.
