    maybe try --with-zlib-dir=/wherever/your/lib/files/are/

    I remember having some issues with this too at first. Also try putting the --with-zlib earlier in your configure line.

    Oh and... if you are putting your configure line on multiple lines...
    make sure that there are no spaces after the \

    If it says the build date is back in september, you must still be loading the old version. When you run make install php will tell you where the .so file is placed, so run locate libphp4.so and see if there is another one someplace else.

    I'd wager the guess that the php and apache you're running now came from your distribution and places it's files somewhere else than the self compiled versions.

    www.whatsmyip.org/mod_gzip_test/ says that my browser (Win XP IE6) "is not requesting Gzip'ed content."

    I understood older browsers did not support it but mine is brand new??
