Separators In Page Title

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by TikTok, Nov 29, 2007.

Is there any distinction or difference in the way different characters or symbols are used to divide/separate their phrases in their Page Title?

    For example:

Bob's Fluffy Pillows - Soft Comfortable Sleeping

Bob's Fluffy Pillows | Soft Comfortable Sleeping

    Bob's Fluffy Pillows--Soft Comfortable Sleeping

Convention would lead me to believe the first example is the most common.

    Any feedback?

I believe the first version would be better. It really doesn't matter how you separate the keywords as long as you don't spam in your page title.

The dash looks better to the user, SEO wise it really doesn't matter.

The dash is what I use, but if you are tight on character limits keep in mind that spaces count towards those limits.

Somebody was able to BS a bunch of people into thinking silly marks in a title make a difference.

I'll bet anyone $1,000.00 cash they cannot find 10 of the last 50 New York Times Best Sellers that use | in the title of the book.

    Any takers????

    $1,000.00 is the bet......

keyword separators such as - or | doesn't really matter to SE spiders..

any of the choices will do as SE treats all separators as equal.
So the choices would be based on its appearance and I prefer the second one as what Aira said it looks neat and readable.

I respect Rand a great deal but that is pure marketing BS.

the offer is now double $2,000.00

and I will make it easier 5 books from the New York Times best seller list with any silly ass characters in the printed title of the book!!!

Your christmas, kwanza, chanukka, or whatever holiday you may, or may not, celebrate, participate, join in, will be that much better by simply proving that silly marks make a title more readable.....

Otherwise its all marketing hype, and anyone who thinks that the marks are smurfy, is susceptible to advertising overzealousness.

$2k for 5 books.....the challenge has been set.....

There is no seo significance to punctuation. I prefer a comma or single dash and most that I have asked do too.

as they are two different keywords u can use "|" while "-" will be used when there is one keyword and the description. so for your title "|" is best. or else use "," but pls dont use "-".;)

It doesn't matter on SEO. But IMO it's better to use dash or the colon because they look better, and they are commonly used in different reading materials unlike the other characters that look unusual.

It doesn't make even a dime's difference to SEs.

However, I personally think "|" is much better. "-" looks good only when you are writing just two phrases.

    For eg:
SEO Services - Free SEO consultation
    This aint looking that bad.

    However, if you compare

---> SEO Consultant - SEO Services - SEO blog - SEO Tutorials
---> SEO Consultant | SEO Services | SEO blog | SEO Tutorials

The second one looks more presentable... Thats what I think though... ;)

    Cheers.. :)
