    I was always under the assumption that you are paid for clicks but I was reading that you might be paid for views as well? Is that true?

    Yes, some ads are CPM, usually they will fill the entire ad block similar to a PSA.

    G says they will only show them if they are paying the same as a CPC ad would in the same place.

    Yup, you also get paid by pageviews when someone advertises on your adsense account through clicking "Advertise on this Site" on your google ad.
