A 301 redirect is a way of bumping visitors to a new page. Most commonly you changed the URL so you "redirect" the old to the new so incoming links and visitors are attributed to the new url. 301 differs from a 302 in that you're essentially telling search engines it's a permanent move.

Good answer. Also, if you want to preserve SEO and link value of an old page, then you'd want to use a 301 redirect. This doesn't work for any other types of redirects.

It is a way of tellung your visitors and SE that your site is permanently moved into new location.
Another thing: its a way to maintain your current rankings

Search engines often regard yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com as two different websites unless you take specific measures to signal to them that they are the same site.

The best way to handle this situation is to setup what is known as a permanent redirect (or a "301" redirect) from one of these sites to the other. This way, any links that are pointing to the secondary site benefit the primary site, from an SEO perspective.

Does anyone know if the redirect that is included in cPanel is a 301 or a 302 or none of the above?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

301 redirect is known a permanent redirect

If you want to move your visitors from one page to another page then then you can move the visitors through 301 redirect.

so you will not loose the traffic and can popular the new page.:)
