Is it the right time to start a new directory or should I wait?

In the last 3-4 PR updates, Google has come down heavily on Directories websites. Although, my directory got a PR increment but I fear now that starting a new directory might not yield much in the current scenario.

Most of the link submission on the directories were due to the importance of PR.

What if I start a directory, do the link building for it and Big G comes heavily on it due to selling links like many other directories?

Is it the right time to start a new web directory or should I wait?

Mr G has zero to do with starting a directory

3rd party rating systems also have zero to do with Directories

If you have the time and dedication then why not start now, but remember it will cost you a lot to get established :)

    Good Luck

Actually, I spent $0 advertising my directory, and it has gotten 108 links in the past two days!

    I agree with britishguy!

It really depends on your reasons for starting a directory.
If you are starting a directory for the purpose of creating a great resource for visitors; start one now.
If you are starting one for PR purposes then maybe you should wait, but then again there may always be trouble with third party rating systems, thats why quality directories do not rely on them.

Directories do n't depend upon others like Google they are independent sources of information

The best examples are directories like BOTW,Yahoo andd Business.com

It takes a while to become established anyway so over the coming months you may have a clearer picture of how things are going, so i would say if you have the time then the present time is fine to start a directory, just think about the route that you want to take with yours, take it steady and see how you get on.

You never know until you try for yourself, once you get rolling you might get some unique ideas of your own too, yours could be the next biggest thing, you never know. ;)

Totally agree with everyone here, you should be the one who decides when the right time to launch your directory is.

If your having doubts, It's the wrong time to start, as mentioned a lot of hard work ( to do it properly ) over a long period and not something to step into unless your 100% clear in your mind of the outcome you want.

With your obvious ignorance in directories why would you want to start one? You might want to consider volunteering with one of the volunteer edited directories and at least learn something of the business. Do you have the 10 to 50 thousand to launch and market a directory?

I think its the perfect time to start a Directory!

    If you start now!
    1. Youll take time to choose a domain
    2. get your hosting
    3. choose a script/ Ask around wich script to use.
    4. search around for a good template,.... then understand a unique template takes you extra miles
    5. get a coder to code/ design a unique template!
    6. get a coder in for unique mods/ content/ extra goodies!
    7. learn the diffrence between good sites and bad when accepting submissions.

After all this youll start your promotion! ... and hopefuly by the time ( roughly say 2 - 4 months) this PR fever will die, and so will threads like these!

youll be good to launch a directory full throttle! :D

You'd start now because you'd spend lot of time to promote your directory.
Submit quality content in your directory.
Come in the field work and launch your directory.
Don't stay on the bank of river. Come and swim.

    Good luck.
