I have made a complete case study of web masters entering the directory business to make a quick buck & where do most of them land up. http://www.directorytotal.com/planning-to-start-a-new-directory-read-this/ Please give me feedback on the above article, If I have missed any of the points. I have really not tried to exaggerate on any point. But just trying to post the truth and what really happens. Amit.
A great article Amit, I think you've brought up excellent points in order to run a well-established web directory. Regards, Meti
Nice article but "you have to invest money" point is not quite right in my opinion. You can get a pr 5-6 dir easily without paying if you really know link building.
A good read, so what your saying is we have Biglooser, submitting to another big Looser who has submitted to another Big Looser, making a big rubbish heap of big loosers. I think there has been a perception that it is an easy game, and maybe at one point it was, moving forward i think we will see less BL operators, but i could be wrong.
Yes because you are so right its not a market for chancers, butchers, bakers and candle stick makers et al Its the real world and its tough and you need to be very professional And if can't make the time and commitment then don't bother
Hi John, I know that happens sometimes that you get pr5 & pr6 directly from Pr0, Or I may say that you can get some times lucky with Google. Also again Link Building will definately cost you money. BigLoser is a term that just came in randomly while I was writing this post. Also I wanted everyone to have a nice laugh
Great Article, I have to agree it turned out to be a lot harder than I had imagined, but that is ok with me. If you ever plan to make it in the directory industry. You really have to be in for the long haul so to speak.
Hi! As a newcomer and future director (haha is that appropriate name for directory owner? ) I found your post very helpful, thanks for posting. I'm about to start my own directory soon so any advice is great....sure I'll have many problems along the way, actually I plan to run a blog about my journey, in a way it'll be sort of a case study to help others who decide to start their own directories. (huh....there are already so many problems for me to overcome, starting with language barrier as english is not my native language, to being unable to accept paypal due to shi**y country I live in, etc. It's gonna be one hell of a journey for sure - at least I will try not to end like BigL from your post Thanks for advice once again ;-)
Ultimate read! ...lol A perfect portrayal of an average person coming to directories, very few stick to their guns! Its just not directories, as a service provider ive seen this in many other niches! people read about how easy it is to make money online! and they want to make it big w/o investing big [time/ money] time is the essential investment here. As per my experience the net is not at all diffrent from real life! th only diffrence being, in real life you walk around, on the net, you sit around! Keep it real, keep it clean,...the only way to make some good money! M.
Well written. perhaps a bigger conclusion on why bigloser failed and what you should do to avoid being like him. I posted a comment
nice article! i hope this will stop the QBC directories pop'in everyday! most people read some ebook to earn money making directories, then end up making a directory and do not archive anything. A successful web directory demands time and money! got to stay for the long, and must enjoy the work, else it's not going to be easy!
Good overview, it sounds a bit like mine in a few places but I am sure it is because we are writing about the same topic
I believe it would be foolish for some to start a directory at the present time. The time to make money using web directories has passed. That field is over-saturated and only a few players actually make money.
Please read my post above! If you were to argue w.r.t. Mr. G! yes its a bad time to launch! But if your core argument is "Saturation"! wake up! tell me one nich that isn't! video sites, blogging, ringtones, social communities, bookmarking,.... tell me one! Its upon you, what you build! and how it will click with the prospective visitor! Its never about how many ompetitors you have! I say more competition the better, as you have to build more steam to outwin them! M.
Interesting article, but I knew the general concept before I read it, and i've never owned a directory.
that was good article. now i will need to think before i get started. I was thinking to have specialized directory like only for SEO companies or only for hosting companies....
