What's Going on Here?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by dp-user-1, Nov 6, 2007.

I was hosted with a company called BigBlueHost (www.bigbluehost.com).

When I looked up my IP address, I got a site called www.aarall.com.

When I go to www.aarall.com/~myusername, I get to my site.

What's going on here? Why is my FTP located on somebody else's site? Does this mean that for the last several months my files have all been visible to somebody and I haven't known it? I understand that I'm not on a dedicated server, but is this the normal way of things?

EDIT: NS2.BIGBLUEHOST7.COM leads to www.aarall.com as well.

    Help is appreciated,
    Peter

Do you have cPanel access to your server or ftp access only? It may be that your account was setup using an add on domain within someone elses account

I have both cPanel and FTP access. Am I right in thinking that this looks sketchy?

Yes, it definitely looks wrong. I still think it looks like your site has been hosted as an add on domain. Of course I cannot say for sure. I would suggest that you contact your host and ask them to explain - then update us here with what they say

Thats due to mod_userdir in Apache

Your server has main domain www.aarall.com
while your account creator has another domain - www.bigbluehost.com

aarall.com/~username is only possible IF the domain is in hostname. So, you can consider its server's hostname, adn nothing else. Nothing is there to be worried about :)
