What is better to check traffic statistics than Alexa ?

    Alexa and Google PageRank are helpful to external visitors as it gives a general idea as to the value of a site for traffic, etc.

    Both can be manipulated, especially Alexa. Since they can be viewed by the public people use them as a consideration when buying/selling advertising, links and blog posts.

    Stats for the webmaster is best viewed by the server logs and related reporting tools, if they are allowed by your host. Next best may be Google Analytics and similar.

    The problem with these is that they normally use javascript, which is increasingly blocked these days.
