Monetization is HARD.

People You'll See In Hell had about 12000 visitors last month, about 58000 pageviews last month, and made $35.00 - all of it from Adsense.

I just picked up a PR4 at the last update.

While the site itself is mostly a labor of love, my wife would probably be nicer to me and let me write more if I could actually see a better return on the time I put into the site.

I'm in CJ, Azoogle, Linkwork and a few other affiliate networks, and have put a number of affiliate banners up (getting some clicks) but I've yet to make a single sale.

I sold a single link with TLA for a few months, but with the recent furor regarding paid links, I really don't want to chance things with my google standing since most of my traffic is from google.

So, does anyone have any ideas on how I could increase my income?

(Currently in the process of learning CSS and designing a new theme, so that's already being done.)

Just google "people you'll see in hell"

It would help if you would tell us your url. Without knowing anything about the niche you're in or how you have placed your ads, it is hard to give advices. 12.000 unique visitors a month isn't much, but it should earn you more than 35$.

First off... lol... interesting concept for a website, but yet unique!

It might be hard to advertise on this site, it doesn't really have a niche or product relation. Your best bet is trying to use Google Adsense and see what that pulls in, or offer advertising to some sort of religious service.

Interesting subject indeed, but very hard to monetize. As ssandecki suggested, you should experiment with CPC networks such as Adsense, YPN, Bidvertiser etc because I can't think of an affiliate program that would go along with your website's theme.

Monetization is easy. What type of ads is your site showing? Do you have good placement?

Well, I've thought of background check affiliates, but I've implimented a few banners and a few links onto the site, and haven't seen any kind of return. AT ALL.

I'm guessing private ads would be the best, for the advertiser because they'd be getting a whole lot of impressions, and for me because I could finally see some income.

I've got an adsense banner above the first post

I've got an adsense link unit on the leftmost sidebar

I've got two text links to affiliates under my subscription section - one for a background check affiliate and one for an astrology affiliate

Big 160x600 banner for stamps.com affiliate (just went to CJ and picked up the best-performing ad I could find)

When going to posts, I've got another astrology affiliate banner above the headline

I've got a floating adsense big rectangle that displays in a different location within the post itself each time the post is loaded.

At the bottom, I'm trying out an e-bay big banner thing...still playing with that though. It's not coming out how I want it to.

For sites which are hard to monetize because they are so unique there is one thing that may be going for you - viral marketing.

For one, you should try to get into stumbleupon cause I think enough people could like the site for it to really go up in traffic a bit. Also try other social networks, perhaps even digg. I know one way you could end up getting in digg. Write about Bill Gates going to hell and back it up with some factual but witty and humorous facts. LOL..

So my point is that the unique sites like these could have a huge traffic potential in which case even if ads you display will never have perfect targetting you'll at least be able to sell on base of traffic amounts alone, CPM (cost per thousand impressions).

    Good luck and have fun!

Do you guys think affiliate banners even work at all?

I have a real estate and put two banners on to try, one for a company that sells moving boxes, and another banner that links to an apartment searching site, I got about 1% click through rate. I'll work on the ad placement a little, but 1% is horrible.

People are saying that text links do better than banners, so I suggest that you use text links with some good content about it. You also might want to look into cpm ads and pay per play once they get off the ground. Pm me to sign up under me and I'll do all I can to make sure that you are successful. I got a few tricks up my sleeve that I use to get at least a 100% return on advertising.

Monetization is not hard. Steady traffic is hard. Once you get the steady traffic, then monetization is simple.

I dont see any ads from Google Adsense... All your ads came from other advertising sites... Besides, the ads in not so interesting to click it.
