Do your parents think you are wasting your life as a Web entrepeneur?

This is a very relevant question for most of us around here. We are young or moderately aging (not me I'm still youthful at 24:p) and my question is what do your parents think about your web activities. For this topic I would like you to introduce yourself and tell us about what you do Online activities you do to make money, how successful you have been at doing it and what your parents think about it. I will go first.

My parents at first hated the idea of me making money online thinking it wasn't really possible and a waste, to this day they still feel its like that to some degree but after seeing me make money online do at least entertain the idea that making money over the Webb can be a real source of profit, don't get me wrong though they still believe that getting a real job one day is the only way to guarantee myself financial stability and probably think the my Webb activities won't last forever. Well now that I have shared my story please share yours.

Ya i agree completely being a 17 year old my parents and rest of my family and everyone else is totally against it. They are like this is the age to study and not make money or set up some business online. And my relatives are insane they think all i do is keep on chatting online and they see no future in internet marketing or anything online. I tried explaining it to them actually i told them all my plans but still they refuse to believe anything i tell them and they are stuck that i am simply wasting my time online by chatting with others (not even trying to make money online). But i am lucky that dad's supporting me and he has full faith in me. So now i don't give a damn what my family members say i have started working hard and one day i will show it to them that there is tremendous amount of money to be made online. I will earn the money and show it to them. So now i have started working hard towards my goals hopefully i will achieve them in near future.

Being 18 for 5 months and my dad thinks it is a waste of time. My mom however thinks its a great idea but prefers that I study and graduate from college before doing anything. Heck if my business is doing well I might become a full-time student to a part time one.

But hey, the richest people are business owners/investors.

My Dad used to think that it was a complete waste of time, until I showed him that I earned $1,200 over the last three months. By comparison that would be 210 hours of part-time labor at minimum wage. Something hard to find since most of my local employment opportunities for summer labor would pay below minimum wage and "reward" me with extra payment in the form of a pool membership and discounted balls at the driving range. *Awesome :]*

That would also be before the expense of driving to the place of business and many places wouldn't be too keen on how much time I was going to be gone for college visits and programs over the summer. So, yeah, he was kinda shell shocked when I dropped that logic bomb. Just wait until my proxies take off *fingers crossed*. My mom has generally supported the idea and thought it was really cool that I knew how to sell a bunch of my school's old books to places online.

Heh good to see I'm not the only one.

I'm in college and my parents are mad that I'm spending too much time learning to make money online and not enough time learning to get a career...

but this is so much better than working in a cubicle for the rest of my life :)

I've never had a problem myself, but I understand many people are still stuck in the mindset of "go to school > go to more school > get a job > work for someone else until you're 65 and earn enough to live off."

Those people don't understand people with the entrepreneur mindset who, be it through offline or online businesses, are only happy making money their own way.

If they can't understand an entrepreneur in the offline world, this new fangled Internet thing won't ever sit well with them.

Hah by that point they shouldn't even have an opinion, they should just say nice things whenever you are around. For the rest of us however if we aren't showing the kinds of earnings that people would generally see from working a 9-5 then we aren't seen as successful and even if we are able to make decent amounts parents always judge the consistency of this kind of business, but as someone pointed out above most parents don't think from and Entrepreneur's prospective, they are thinking like average people whom follow but don't lead.

To our parents the greatest example of a leader in their eyes is a supervisor, manager/executive manager, but an actual entrepreneur might be well over their heads since its just not their field of interest. We often like to say that we have a lot more opportunities than our parents and in many ways its true however from a business prospective there were numerous opportunities available to them back in their days that have all been capitalized on so extensively now that they are not realistic for modern day Business men and women.

I think some people are just born leaders while others are just born followers, some might want to argue that well maybe their parents couldn't do these things even if they had wanted to because they were too busy raising a family and putting food on the table but lets be serious, who told them to go off and get married so early or have children so quickly (not to mention have numerous children). Parents are always saying that they have made so many sacrifices for their children but in the long run I think its really the children whom end up making many sacrifices for their parents to make up for the mistakes they made. I apologize if this sounds a bit rash to anyone but its just the way I look at things.

My parents are actually very interested in internet marketing. Perhaps its because they are not very exposed to the technology world. They both have fulltime jobs and when I show them that its actually possible to make money from the internet, they got very interested :D I told them that its a form of passive income and has 0% risk because I invested with no money only time and every dollar I make is profit.
