To Follow or Not to Follow that is the question!

Hi Guys,

Just wondering with a directory would it be wise to make all listings "no follow" links as not to attract the wrath of google?

Also wondering would Google still index the site if all listings had the "no follow" attribute?

Whats the Pro's and Con's to going the "No Follow" route with links in a directory?

 

Personally, I would not submit to a directory that is nofollow. It is not just Google that we submit our sites to directories for.

There is Yahoo and MSN too!

 

Dont use nofollow in the directory, people who buy needs links.

 

Ok so thats one of the cons to No Follow, is there any advantage to using it?

 

No Follow would be only good if you high traffic to your directory.

 

On my new directory www.w7directory.com we have both options available firstly or free links are no-follow, the advantage to the submitter is free advertising that may bring some traffic, will also help me with some extra content.

All paid listings are followed and will remain that way.

i think a directory should always follow, directories are categorized and human edited, when you review a website and accept it in your directory, its like if you are voting for this website, this is what natural links that google loves are all about, VOTING!.... IMHO human edited directories links should never use the no-follow tag.

Because i do respect "matt" to an extent for his goals of a better search i did as he asked and lost sponcers due "HIS" request..
(not that any was ever not relevent as they where other directories or SEO relevent)

Not only that but the other SEs send me much more traffic the google does and im not going to
disrespect my submitters ...

I red somewhere some of most popular sites rejected to use no follow simply because it means no trust in eyes of search engines and it is considered insult to advertisers.

If a directory sells those sitewide links or has lists of links. (trying to manipulate search engines)

Those IMO could be considered as paid links.

So u could make them nofollow, but I don't think people will then buy those links.

But directory listings if reviewed and applied properly, they are not paid links.

So those should not be nofollow.

Even lists of links like

http://www.directoryjunction.com/established-directories/

http://www.directoryjunction.com/specialty-directories/

http://www.directoryjunction.com/free-directories/

are not considered as paid links, cause they don't attempt to manipulate search engines, but provide the user with listed information.

Now, however the links in the partner box on the left, they could be considered as paid links.

So u gotta see and first understand what exactly paid links are, and then u'll be able to make ur own decision.

 

I set my directory to follow and it's free, not many directory owners who have a personal free directory do this because they want something back. Does Google penalize those with paid links? who knows but I am not going fishing anytime soon for this issue to be resolved on my site.

However with my review on directories with nofollow is that they won't be crawled as much in deep categories and those who submit to them are waisting their valued time when they could simply submit to the free ones like iSteve Daily and get something back in return.

no follow??? why submit to directories with no follow???
when i havent any directory i submit my sites to the directories for SE to do follow my sites.if you do a no follow directory you will be banned from the people(internet users) so you can decide G or users/submiters.just my opinion.

Well to be honest id like to have "small banners" 81 x 31 Banner in scrolling rotation
compared to links for "traffic" using darges mod as i think they would get more clicks.

Ill try and see if i cant get that going soon

I think its a bad idea to use nofollow.

Because people are also submitting into directories for increasing their backlinks.

It's high time people stopped banging on about Google, their paid links, nofollows and the like. Get on with doing your thing and let Google get on with the hash of a job they are making of trying to combat paid links.

You shouldn't use nofollow because your customers expect them to be follow. End of story, forget the rest, your customers are key.

 

I don't use "No Follow" but wanted to find more about it.
