hmm interesting, I'll look into adbrite, too bad they only do checks but I might be able to make it work..

any others? the website is a forum, car club that has about 800 members, and gets 1400-1800 uniques a day

Many web publishers make great money with Affiliate Programs. Especially if you have a gadget/tech related blog, affiliate programs would be your best alternate.

If you dont mind popups on your site you could try Adversal. I hear they pay a very good rate. About $6 for 1,000 imprestions.

yeah, lots of other posts about this - one just a few minutes ago..

but to answer your question: for me, Kontera earns nearly as much as Adsense does. it's worth a try..

You have many choices out there. I have a veichle forum and have done many different test to see which program works best. If I were you I would try every thing out there and see what works best for your readers. Currently I am trying widget bucks on my forum. Yes you can use Widget bucks on a forum if you know how to do it.

if it's about automotive business you can always try E-bay affilate program ;) also, if you're from the US or Canada, Yahoo Publisher Network will be ok for you.

I think adbrite is one of the best choice but could never surpass adsense in many ways. I don't recommend bidvertiser because it requires a lot of time to earn something from it.

I'd probably try auctionads! Actions are defined as a Winning Bid, a Buy-it-Now or a confirmed user registration. AuctionAds is paying out 100% of eBay commission revenue. If one of your visitors who clicked on auctionads buys a car or anything else in the period of 30 days, you get comission. If you sell one car each week, you should get a nice revenue, that no other advertising company could give you (on this particular automobile site with 1000-1500 uniques)... Plus such ads will blend in with your content easily, because I'm sure ALL your visitors are interested in cars one way or another and the may be looking exactly for something you will display on your ads.

Try it and see if it works!

There's a new buzz and its WidgetBucks... I am not sure how well it will do in the future... still you can give it a try... people have earned as much as $1000 in 11 days. Good Luck
