SPAM attack - any solutions?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by jl255, Oct 21, 2007.

Over past few months, I've been flooded with spam on all my Wordpress blogs that goes something like:

"I couldn't understand some parts of this article, but it sounds interesting..."
    and a few other phrases.

These spam comments get through the spam checks and I wonder if there is anything that can be done to block them out. Anyone has any solutions??

    Tks!

Not sure where this shld go, mods pls help move it if not appropriate. Tks.

it's not really business as SPAM is more to do with Marketing, which is why i thought this forums was more appropriate. But whatever gets more feedback on possible solutions is fine with me ;)

    I had a similar problem

You will need to write a script to go into your wordpress database and go through the table with the results. Loop through the entries and if there are these keywords OR if there are 2+ instances of <a href=", then remove it from the database.

I recommend just writing it yourself but I would sell the one I wrote for $50

moderate your comments. I think there is a tool that can identify spam comment but I forgot what software it is.

Do you use akismet? If I am not mistaken you can mark the messages as spam in akismet and it will filter the future comments structured the same way. If you are not using akismet, I highly recommend you do so.

I always get the same spams. They're always on older posts that have fallen off the front page ... probably hoping you won't notice there.

Since installing Akismet, which comes with a standard WP install, not one of these has got through. It seems to get a false positive now and then, but ...

tks dude, i'm sure many will appreciate your efforts. Will be sure to give it a shot on my websites. I've used SPAM KARMA, which is quite effective in blocking out most spam, but the ones I mentioned get through probably due to their very 'un-spam'-like comments. Your mod shld block it right? Anyway, rep coming your way ;)

Spam usually comes in the form of having URLs and links... on my mod you can set it so if it exceeds an X amount of links, it is removed as spam

what I noticed is on one of my blogs, I get spammed with ruby and rails stuff on one blog and the other is like viagra and sex stuff. So you can edit my antispam.php and change the spam words that fit your blog's spammers

All you need to do is enable the Akismet plugin.

You will need a Wordpress API key but you can obtain this by simply registering at Wordpress.com.

Akismet is a great plug in. Definitely use that.

Also, try putting "but it sounds interesting" in the comment blacklist. Akismet occasionally flags a legit comment, so it keeps all of them until you delete them. If you're still getting a lot of spam (?) like this, put the text in the blacklist and it won't make it into Akismet.
