Start on getting the on page basics right - title & description tags, keywords in H1 headers,well-placed keywords in content, then go out there and get backlinks - best quality you can get, and relevant to your site.

well, my advice is simply write what you want make the site easy to navigate and well linked and above all add content and don't try and key word stuff, repeat or any other things that use to work.:)

Find out some main keywords using the analytics keyword tool or so. Then start putting those keywords on your pages, title, meta description, meta keywords. Thats the basic.
Once you done with that, start building backlinks.

I recommend following, Aaron Walls seobook.com. He has done a great job in gathering a lot of SEO information in one place. You could spend hours trolling forums for advice and information or you could read his e-book. His book provides a good level set of what you need to know about SEO and SEM. Like you I have spent many hours looking over the "how to" threads only to be disappointed. My advice is to pick one or two industry leaders and follow them.

Here is my aff link to his book.

    Cheers

If your site is new, i think you should get backlink with your site domain.

ex; if your domain is digitalpoint.com you can get backlink www.digitalpoint.com or digitalpoint.com

    Like this;
    <a href="http://www.digitalpoint.com" title="digitalpoint" target="_blank">digitalpoint.com</a>
    Code (markup):
and then you can get backlink your want word/s but first month you should get backlink with your site name.

I think you should start reading basic SEO and try to figure out what elements affects ranking. And then look for the right keyword to target and insert it on your content, title page, alt tags, and meta description.

The best place to "start" with SEO is to concentrate on quality, original and interesting content. That should be your number one priority.

1st Start by building up a list of targeted search terms that people might search for when looking for the products or services you offer.

2nd Chose terms of that list to optimize for on the various pages of your site.

3rd Make sure the chosen term or terms can be found in various areas of the page content including Title Tag, Header Tags, Meta Description, Anchor Text of links and other places in the page content. Do this for every page of your site.

4th Start getting links back to your site by submitting to directories like dmoz.org and others. By writing press releases and articles. By finding related sites to trade links with.

Follow these steps to get started with SEO. Read more about this here at my introduction to SEO site.

If you want to start seo then fist of all you should to do business analysis and market analysis related to your business. Then you should to go for keyword research related to your business, then go for meta tag creations and then body content and image optimization, creating internal link structure. After the completion of on page optimization you should to go for off page optimization talk like search engines and directories submission, SBM etc.
