searching for the best keyword for a site I came up with a set of words, example:
    cheap spare part

Obviously I prefer to use cheap spare parts on the title of the site on h1 etc etc, is that a problem? does google differentiate between singular and plural?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Yes, Google does differentiate between singular, plural, past tense and other variations. While Google will match those variations with a user's search, it will always give preference to an exact match.

Of course they do. One part is different from many parts. If it's a different word, Google will treat it differently, and prefer an exact match.

You need to optimize for both words if that is your intention.

If you don't have the budget/time to optimize for both, find out which receives more search volume by using Google Trends. For example: search volume comparisons between "hat" and "hats."

Also, it depends on what you are selling/optimizing. If you are a wholesaler, it obviously makes sense to focus on plural orders rather than wasting time and money optimizing for small, single orders. However, if your profit margins are higher for single, small batch orders, it might be wise to optimize for the singular terms.

It will be different so you either optimize for both or choose the one with more searches.

use some keyword research tool and compare it. Choose whether you are satisfied with plural or singular keyword.

plural is definitely the way to go, especially in reference to commerce.

generally in my experience if I rank for one, I'll rank for the other too, but maybe 6 pages later.
