I think only the link seller will get penalized but the links buyer will lose the links value as the will not help in ranking anymore.

Link Buyer will be affected more. If link buyer buy the links from many directories
but google will ban those sites and link buyer backlinks will be decrease. Anyway link buyer will loose some dollars and link seller will loose some effort made to get that page rank.

Google algorithm must have got special consideration for domain like google, amazon (so even if you get 1000 paid links, or spam forums, etc) it will not hurt them. Only way we can pay back google is by stoping spending money on adwords.

    Why do you think so?

First of all, how do google know if a link is purchased or natural one if the deal is done privately.

Now, let us assume that google got the full list of link sellers from Text Link Seller's database. According to the argument I will get penalized if I buy a link from those sites. What if I buy a link for MattCutts blog? Will google ban him? What if I buy a link which points to my competitors site? Will google penalize my competitor?

On the other hand it might be true that, google may not be giving enough credit for questinable back links. But penalizing for buying links doesn't sound logical to me.

I agree with Neo, if the buyer was penalised then many webmasters would use this as a tatic to knock out their competitors ... e.g. point some spammy paid links to them. The result could be an even greater distortion to SERPs. The most likely scenario is that Google will devalue paid links they are able to identify, and "posisbly" ban sites that are identified for selling links.

Text link ads do not compete with AdWords. AdWords sells ads for traffic they send to the advertiser's site. Most text link ads are sold for their value in affecting the search engine rankings of the advertiser's site - which is a violation of Google's Guidelines, and Yahoo!'s and MSN's as well. There are many advertising programs you can use on your site that comply with Google's Guidelines and will not be penalized because they have no effects on search engine rankings.

    I agree with you.

Text Link Ads do not compete with Adwords. And google got all the right to ban the sites using them.

But what I haven't understood is, why google is showing all the Text Link Broker's ads through adwords if the service what they provide is totally against the guidelines of google?
So google can enjoy the money from text link ads on adwords but we can't use them because they are agaist google terms. If the product that is advertised is of no use to the buyer, then why the hell google says it has a quality score thing for the landing pages. May be another bogus term just to increase the bid amount. What is the logic?

Well everyones loves money I guess.

I have nothing against google and infact I love the traffic they send. Google needs quality websites in their index and we need search traffic. That is a win-win situation.
But google want text link ads money and we are not allowed to use them is not fair. ;)

    Just my humble opinion.

Do you understand why Google is penalising Paid links business before accusing google that they are promoting adwords?

Google never said dont buy and sell links. They are selling done buy and sell links to inflate PR.

there is something called rel="Nofollow". Get familiar with it.

Google is fine with advertising as long as it's done purely for Advertising purpose. If your links have rel="nofollow" it clearly means you are not passing any PR.

Before accusing someone, always think twice! I still can't believe everyone on this thread believes google is being EVIL. Think logically!

Surely link seller will get the penalty. If link buying can put a penalty, I can throw all my competitors out of business. :D

This is interesting, google charges me 25 cents per click and i get 2 cents per click from my site. Now selling links brings me some extra cash since goole takes 1000% more than i make... That like working for free...

I agreed with your post. People need quality sites when they're using SEs like google thus they must do something to keep showing good results.

But shame on google for taking money from people who buy and sell links
