The nofollow attribute

Today I decided to disable the nofollow attribute on my blog. I wanted to see if it encourages people to leave more comments on my blog.
What do you guys think about using the nofollow attribute? Do you think it's a good idea disabling it?

I have it disabled as well, although I'm not sure if it induces more visitors to comment.

I've started checking for this in the source before I make comments, but I'm going to have to step into the 21st century and download a Firefox or Greasemonkey plugin that will do this for me. I would definitely be more apt to make a comment on a blog where the link counts.

as long as you are still moderating the comments submitted, it will help you out, otherwise , your blog will just end up on the blog being spammed

be sure to add a "You comment I follow" badge so everybody knows that you've removed NoFollow..
I just started doing this last month, and comments have increased, but coincidentally so has traffic so it's hard to tell which came first..

FYI - there is a very simple hack to you do to firefox that will make NOFOLLOW links show up in red.. Google it..

Sure it will increase comments but the increase will be mainly people posting useless comments for a backlink.

Even useless comments are better than NO comments..
Just watch out for outright spam..

I'm going to give it a try.

So far comments are still few but I'm sure they'll pick-up soon. Spam isn't a problem since Askimet has things under control.... :D

It encourages some but not too many to comment. I think still content is what attracts most of the readers and commentators. And yes, do include the Do follow badge if you disabled the no follow attribute.

I use this plugin for WordPress to remove the nofollow attribute in comments...
I have not publicly announced it (except here) but I have some really good plugins enabled to combat spam so I really have not had a huge problem...

here's a little tip to encourage comments: at the end of your posts, ask a question...for example in a recent post about Wordpress 2.3, I asked?
"Did you have any problems with plugins not working after you upgraded to 2.3?"

you have to encourage people to comment, sometimes :)

I don't think spam will be a problem. Askimet is very good so I'm really not worried. I think that disabling the nofollow attribute is the correct thing to do, especially because the internet has grown to be rather greed orientated place.

I totally agree with you. I think if a person has taken the time to come to your blog and post a legitimate comment then that person's reward should be a dofollow link.

Akismet is very good along with a couple of other plugins like Comment Timeout, for example

Can anyone tell me how to remove nofollow on a blogger blog?

And where do I get one of those "You comment I follow" badges?

found this on how to remove nofollow on blogger.

One thing I noticed, maybe just removing nofollow you might not see a big increase in comments, the top commentator plugin seems to work best since everyone will try hard to get there.. might increase spam too :D
