Silverlight 1.0

Discussion in 'Bing' started by Ozzie, Sep 29, 2007.

I hope this is the right place to post this. If not please move. I have been reading about the release of Silverlight 1.0 and I think it is out of beta, is this correct? Also, can this be used on a person's website or blog?

Is there any reason a non tech person would want to download this if they are not a developer? Thanks for any help you can give me.

The only instance where I have seen Silerlight in action is using Micosoft's new search interface called Tafiti. Nice eye candy but don't think I'd use it that much

What exactly is silverlight? I saw on their webpage that it's avialable for linux, but the download link didn't work. Also they don't have a very good description on their site, other than it's for streaming media?

I think they will have to integrate it with the browser before it will become a standard... it is easier to work with than flash though

Silverlight 1.0 is pretty limited along with it's current 1.1 alpha version because there's no UI controls like Flash has however Microsoft along with Telerik and Infragistics are working on developing some nifty controls for Silverlight 1.1.

Yeah its out, u will need the Micro$oft expression crap to crate it as far as I know. I realize that it's still in beta, but unless it comes up with some crazy shit that Flash can't do, I'm pretty much sticking to flash as pretty much everyone has the Flash player as it is.

I never use a first release M$ product.

I think we all know that with Micro$oft, "Quality is SP-1"

    ...clear as mud :)

It's a .NET plugin for creating web multi-media app's as far as I can tell.

    - No market penetration, especially compared to Flash
    - Less functionality than Flash

Why anyone would bother with Silverlight, I don't know.

I have really appreciated everyone's replies to my questions about this. I didn't understand much about Silverlight and couldn't decide whether or not I wanted it.
I agree with what someone said about the first release of many M$ items being kind of.....well, not something they like to use. I do like the sound of it being easier to use than Flash.

Again, thanks for this discussion. :)

Well 1.0 of Silverlight is only Javascript based so that means you don't get to use the .NET languages to code Silverlight 1.0 applications. Silverlight 1.1 has the .NET support to it however it's only in a alpha release right now and don't expect much from it until next year.

As I understand it, Silverlight can be higher quality than Flash, which could be significant now that Flash-based video sharing sites have taken over the web.

I just downloaded Adobe Media Player running in AIR. Great stuff! Can't wait to see AIR for Linux scheduled for next year.

I keep reading about this in UK web design mags. It's part of Microsofts grab for web 3.0, apparently. I do mean to look into it all soon.
