while i dont want to think that macs are beginning to take over, it is inevitable. also, worldwide market cap means nothing, as half of the countries buy windows because they can run it on garbage machine and microsoft offers a windows basic for low prices.

I have to slap you with the latest quote on my Steve Jobs quotes page for that one:

“We can’t ship junk. There are thresholds we can’t cross because of who we are. The difference is, we don’t offer stripped-down, lousy products.”

    :p

while it is true that apple never seems to ship a bad machine (for personal use anyway), what do u have to say about the fact that they often dont offer top of the line graphic cards as soon as pcs do, and lack some of the hardware functionality that pcs give you?

Hmmm, people are saying that Macs are overpriced...here is a comparison:

    These are Australian prices.

    PC
    8800GTX
    e6600 - 2.4ghz
    2GB Ram
    320GB HDD
    No Monitor

    iMac
    2GB Ram
    320GB HDD
    2.4ghz
    24" Monitor Included

Okay, so the PC is obviously better for gaming purposes, but lets look at this from a wider perspective. The PC is around $3100 (and it is actually my PC) whilst the iMac is $2,819.00.

Macs also gain kudos because of their cheaper sofware. Think about it, Microsoft Office? That'll set you back a few hundred dollars, and that is software that anyone who wants a PC basically needs. Mac has their iWork package, which may have less features, but includes everything for around $80 that most people would need.

I love my PC, but Macs aren't all expensive. Yes, their notebooks are a bit pricier, but I haven't read one professional review that hasn't said it has not been worth it.

actually, most people i know have been really happy with their macs gaming abilities..though im not sure that using crossover to run .exe files is as good as just dual-booting windows and using that to game

Unless you are planning to play Pong and Pac Man you are wasting your time on a Mac for gaming purposes. Windows is hands down the best.

The reason Microsoft has been ahead mark123456 is because unlike Apple they have had good partnerships with other companies. Apple treats every other company as if they are inferior to them and it p**** most companies off. Even Jobs said this year with his interview with Gates that he has always admired Microsoft's ability to get good partnerships. And he also said if Apple did that they would be bigger.

Why do you think Mac is trying to break up MicroTel's relationship?

worldman this is true but I believe mark123456 also said in his post...just dual boot windows and use that to game

Dual Boot does not work for a lot of things. Remember its still in beta. Secondly most people are not going to want to use dual boot because it compromises system performance and storage. Not to mention the cost and vulnerabilities it can cause.

Yes, it does. Running another OS natively will be perform just as well though it will, of course use more storage space because it has to store the OS. Yes, it costs more but that's the price you pay for running two OSs. It's only emulating/virutalising that is slower.

The way boot system works you can run XP (and I think Vista) as a program in OSX. I would say that slows down performance.

I prefer OS X because it allows me the ease of use of Windows when I need it as well as access to the unix-based system under the hood which I use for software development. Also, I live in Terminal and can't really be as productive in windows.

Yes it does. If you are running Windows as a program then it will drastically put down system performance.

Not nesecarily. If you reboot and run Window natively then there will be little or no drop in performance.

True but not if you are running it natively.

You are confusing Dual Boot and Virtual

Dual Boot: means having multiple partitions in the Hard Disk and run separate, independent OS's. No interaction between them, so no performance degradation. You can have any number of partitions running any number of OS's and not have any problem with performance. (Dual, Triple, Quadruple, etc etc Boot)

Virtual: VirtualBox, VMWare or Parallels means that you run an OS inside the OS using the same hardware resources at the same time.
