I agree with XandroZ. You've given me no reason to click the link...it's just a link with a promise there will be tips there. Give a few highlights, or tips, and you'll find that your click through is doubled or tripled.

    *shrug*

it's your call though... but keep in mind, many of us are still on dialup, and we tend to not click on links, unless there is something that makes it look like the load time will be worth it. Thus far, I've not seen that...especially not from the quote above. It seems your promise in the original post is being thwarted by your hopes of good traffic...if it's just traffic you want, you'll not get mine.

Besides, if you can get something in the thread to generate traffic, the thread will stay on page one longer. The longer is stays on page one, the more people that'll see the link. The more people that see the link improves the click through. Though, heh, this discussion will certainly help... but don't expect it every time.

Save yourself the time, Mr, dial up qryztufre. :)

Same ol' stuff read on this board every day.

    Start of "advice":

The Internet can be an inexpensive way to advertise yourself. There is a wide range of methods by which you can effectively reach your target audience. We'll show you the best ways to build your blog's brand with almost zero effort!

Free Advertising Tip No.1 - Viral Marketing
Viral Marketing is a technique that uses existing networks to produce awareness & buzz about your blog by word of mouth. This technique could involve, for example, the creation of eye-catching web promotions in the form of Flash animations & videos that can be viewed at video sharing websites like Youtube.

If your blog is related to gadgets, eatables, etc you could collaborate with sites like Contests2Win.com to create promotional games around your blog's niche. With prizes as an incentive, you can engage in your blog's branding as the game players usually recommend interesting games to their friends.

Another risky but very effective technique to generate viral buzz is to build a (parody) blog, the content & theme of which revolves around that of some famous blogger. A very good example of this type of marketing is the hugely successful blog JohnCow.com that is inspired by JohnChow.com. People love to talk about such stuffs!

But before you go for viral marketing, make sure you understand these negative aspects:

Legal Threats - This applies to the last technique discussed above. By creating a lookalike site of some famous blog, you might be hitting a nail in your head by violating serious copyrights related to the design or the content of the blog in question.
Brand Control - With viral marketing there is usually no control over branding of your blog. You can't predict what other bloggers will blog about your blog. You may receive positive as well as negative marketing & this can affect your blog's reputation.
Lack of measurement - There is no way you can track who viewed or read your promotions & what actions they took thereafter. In most cases, it is not possible to gauge if new visitors or RSS readers were generated due to your viral marketing efforts.
Having said that, there are several instances where viral marketing has been used to good effect. Take ShoeMoney's T-shirt Friday for example. Companies or blog/site owners send Jeremy shirts for free. He then takes a pic in them and writes a blog post about the sender & his services. The sender & his services get reviewed & Jeremy ends up getting a free T-shirt along with some buzz about this kind of a campaign. Nice, isn't it?

Free Advertising Tip No.2 - Search Engine Marketing
These days most new blogs are discovered by searches conducted on search engines like Google & Yahoo. If you have a new blog, it is hardly likely for Internet surfers to search for your blog by it's name. Only the niche topics you blog about will be searched for. Hence it is important to create content with your target audience in mind. If you can afford, hire a professional web designer who will optimize your website so that it appears among the top search results for search queries related to your niche. More than 50% of traffic on this blog comes from search engines.

Free Advertising Tip No.3 - Social Networking
Social networking sites are a fast-emerging medium for advertising your online presence. These sites allow you to create mini-communities based around your interests. This gives you the opportunity to advertise your blog or website to its correct audience. Social news sites like Reddit & Digg provide instant traffic & StumbleUpon provides long lasting targeted traffic.

Apart from these sites, Make sure you are a member of MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, SpicyPage, and similar services. I strictly do not recommend installing all these widgets on your blog, but you should atleast have your profile on each of these services with links pointing to your blog. And not to mention - use attractive avatars for your profile.

Free Advertising Tip No.4 - Forums
This is the best form of interactive advertising. Join a couple of good forums related to your interests & maintain consistent activity in them by posting frequently & helping others solve their problems. Whenever you blog about something good, post the link in the forums asking for opinions and improvements. Forums like DigitalPoint & SitePoint are full of traffic at any time of the day & provide some real decent exposure. A couple of days back I had posted about one of my articles from this blog on DigitalPoint & was surprised to receive over 100 visits & lots of comments within a couple of hours.

Another way you can advertise using forums is by using attractive taglines as your signature & adding your blog links to it. This way, whenever you post in the forums, your signature with your blog URL will appear below every post you make in the forums.

Free Advertising Tip No.5 - Content Participation
These days it is not only important to have a good blog, but also to participate in creating information. Services like Wikipedia & Yahoo! Answers attract a lot of traffic and can be a great place to advertise. With Wikipedia, you can advertise by participating building it's content, while leaving a small link that points to your blog as a reference to the topic that is being explained.

You can even use Yahoo! Answers the same way. Log in to Yahoo! Answers any time of the day & you will find people hunting for solutions to their problems. You can answer their questions, leaving your blog's link as a signature, or directly link to some post in your blog that you think can suffice as the correct solution to the problem.

Free Advertising Tip No.6 - Comment. Please!
Make it a habit of commenting on top blogs daily. Make it a habit to comment FIRST. A majority of blog readers read only the first few comments made to the post. Hence if you are the first one to comment, you will attract most traffic. Also, the first comments are the ones that get major attention by the blog owners. This method of advertising not only brings free traffic but also helps your blog to get noticed by the big guns in your niche.

If you blog about technology, internet or making money online, make sure you comment on the following blogs without failure:
    Problogger.net
    JohnChow.com
    ShoeMoney.com
These blogs will definitely bring you decent traffic.

    End Note
For short-term advertising, it is always best to go with PPC marketing coupled with a viral campaign in the form of contests / discounts offered at social networking communities. For recurring, long-term returns, it is best advisable to optimize your blog for better search engine rankings & participating in content building activities on the Internet.

We're not sure everything we've talked about will work for you. What matters is that it did work for us, and we hope some of it does work for you too.
