I'm not really sure where to put this, is there an analytics forum anywhere? Regardless, I was wondering what a good percentage of new vs returning visits would be? Obviously new visitors can only be good as more people are finding the site, but too high a percentage surely means that the stickiness fo the site is poor as nobody comes back. Currently I have about 60/40 and was wondering if I should be aiming for a different figure?
You have good percentage. The ideal ratio for healthy and growing site is 2/1. for every one return visitor there should be 2 new visitors.
The ratio depends on what type of site you have. A social networking or content site will have a hard core of people who return regularly, while an ecommerce site may attract lots of new visitors once to make a purchase who then are unlikely to return. Check out the web analytics association for some good resources or see http://www.webanalyticsdemystified.com/discussion_list.asp for a good forum.
