I will put a 1.4 dvd movie on a web page for the visitors to watch. What would be the best way to do that so that the visitors dont have to wait ages by downloading it to see it?

    1.4 hour DVD movie?

You might want to convert this to AVI (smaller resolution) much like youtube videos, so it loads faster.

WMP can play AVI (just did it last night) and quick time as well. This is for Window's computers of course.

If you want it to be compatible for everyone  flash may be the way to go.

you should split it (maximum 100mb files) if you want them to be watched online

or just put in rmbv or divx and allow download of it. should be arroun 400-600mb :D

In AVI format would still be around 1GB upload to Veoh or Stage6 (not youtube they suck) and embed it on your site

If it a video you want to make available for anyone to see I would suggest uploading it to google video. They have the bandwidth required for the stream and the video loads fast enough.

If you choose to host the file on your own server, converting it to flv might be a good thing to do. Although it loses some quality, the end file will look good enough and will load faster.

If you have some very Powerful Hosting then only go for this. Streaming is good as the members suggested even if you are uploading a DVD.But .Avi seems more reasonable. I don't personally like FLV Video Quality so don't recommend it, as quality is more important than Qunatity

Why don't you do what I did HERE

This will actually Pre-load the video before playing. So, it won't skip or stop.

Nice, so the movie is a swf file. How do you convert avi to swf? And can I just the same code as you are using on your page? Whats all that classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" code?
