Young Age a Positive or a Negative?

I run a sports blog and interview athletes and musicians, and I'm 18. I was wondering if I should publicize my age in my about page? Do you think it would drive people away, thinking I am young and naive, or would it increase their interest?

To be honest I doubt people would care about your age as long as you give them good quality stuff to read.

Your age can be a positive too- some people might recommend the blog to others telling em that ''the owner of the blog is a young chap but writes well.....''

If you wish to become a professional in the industry or want to earn some reputation in the long run, then you should probably consider revealing your real name and age.

18 is one of those ages that go either way. You're still a kid to some people, but most everyone realizes that by that age you should be capable of being mature.

I wouldn't publicize it unless you have to though. There's really no special insight you get from being any age.

I'm younger than you and I've never had any problems when I tell people my age- most of them are encouraged by it.

    I run a sports site too :)

Unless you see a particular advantage to listing your age, I recommend against it to anybody at any age. Someone out there will have a problem with your age (too young, too old, too whatever) and there is no reason to alienate any of your potential customers, audience, etc. MY $.02, anyway.

I think it might be a plus to tell your age, especially if your site is super-great. People would be like, "Wow, this 18-year-old is awesome!" :)

I wouldnt tell you age if I were you. I had a very popular website and marketing company by the time I was 16 working for Sony and a few others and I actually did better when I didn't tell my age because I was taken more serious then when I told them my age then they were ALOT less likely to do business with me.

A few people asked why it even matters what my age is. I brought this question to discussion because I wanted to know how to handle it on my about page and in interviews.

I also agree do not do it. Many will be turned off by your age, few will think its a great idea to sit with an 18 year old.

If you want publicists to set you up with bigger interviews, I wouldn't publicize your age when you're that young unless you have some pretty remarkable qualifications.

My 2 cents, If you're a mature looking 18, then just put up a picture of yourself wearing a nice suit, or whatever is appropriate in your industry, make sure the photo could go either way, in other words people wanting someone young will see a young person, and someone wanting an older interviewer will see a youngish looking professional staring back at them. Their own assumptions will get the better of them and you need never mention your age.

BTW, as an aside, I've met some very responsible 18 year olds who would put a 30yr old to shame so if it comes up and you have to answer, just make sure you sound respectful and professional. You should win most over fairly easily.
