Is it possible to learn such things by reading law on a weekend instead of talking to an accountant (who may lie, report etc).

NYS taxes are incredibly high. Federal tax rates are incredibly high. I'm punished for keeping my expenses low. With income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, school taxes, use taxes, and more, it really adds up. I have a good accountant, and deduct everything that's legal. I'm more likely to buy things for business, simply because it will reduce my taxable income, even though I might not really need it-- I'm punished if I don't by the IRS taking away that money...

Everything is all connected to our tax file number in Australia (is that what you call social security?) bank (+)and tax and you pull a red flag if they don't match up. Our high end tax bracket starts at $95k and you pay 47% tax... don't get me started on such ludicrously low "high end" tax bracket limits... I need the Aussie dollar to take a dive (am I the only one???)... we get paid in US dollars...

Since it's very easy to see ads that have AdSense, don't be surprised if governments outside the US start putting in automated systems to track site owners in their country with AdSense, and then do spot audits to see if you are reporting.

Once you get caught hiding something they keep on digging till they find more.

I've been audited several times and it's not pleasant, I declare everything, so they could not find any missing income, but they found mistakes in how I've done employee deductions and fined me lots of money, despite the fact I had actually paid the full amount of taxes, just didn't put the amounts in the right boxes on a form.
