I heard that Google is going to announce and allow some APIs, soon, in order to allow third party developers to push and pull data, in and out, from Google's social networks like orkut and from other non google applications. Google's main goal is to be more open than Facebook (which allows third party developers to build applications on its site). If this turns to be true than its going to be really a killing strategy.

Interesting.. I'd like to see where this goes. I wish the idea was a bit more original, however.

I think google had no choice. The question here is not about bringing a new concept rather the issue here is that Google is feeling threatened because of facebook's increasing popularity. Probably google fears that facebook may take over it.. :)

Who Cares about that? Facebook will never go down because you and all your friends are on it and theres history within your profiles. Facebook is a true social network.

as webmasters, We need to sometimes step back and remember that most of the world doesn't give a crap about developing stuff. Facebook is popular because its Useful. It never Needed Google to blow up into the site it is. Facebook is loyal to users.

Facebook will not fall in our Generation, i mean come on, it already uses ajax...But really, People don't up and leave there profiles and history to join other networks. At least not everyday people who use it for its purpose rather than trying to get some advertising or site recognition.

As a true social network, a better one simply cant be made and cant catch up to the ridiculous daily growth of facebook which you can see at developers.facebook.com. 65% of facebook users use the site daily. Myspace has less than 15%

Oh...and There is only one ad on any page you go to...no headaches.

addaminsane, I am in total agreement with you, that facebook can't be killed so easily. However, the point here is not only about facebook. I think google is trying to target not only facebook rather this seems to be an endeavor to takeover all the social networks. I don't say that these networks would close or shut down but given the size and influence of Google, there would be an impact. What Google is presumably trying to do is to make every site dependent on itself. Lets see how far this will go :)
