Does anyone have a portable GPS device?

I am seriously considering buying a portable GPS device for an upcoming trip and future usage...figured it might be handy for my photography as well.

I wondered if anyone here has one

The only drawback I see is that for what I want to spend $200-$300, I'll probably wind up with something that isn't top shelf like a $500-$700 unit

    Thanks,

    TIM

For around $500, you can keep an eye out for this: Cowon q5. It has GPS and a lot of other stuff, as well

then you should get a new one;). The receiver cost around $100, and a better PDA is like 200-300, so with the same price you get a portable GPS and a PDA.

My friend has one of those and it works perfect.

Also, you can switch to different GPS program if you don't like the one you have, which a portable GPS device can't

basically a hand held device like this: http://www.buy.com/prod/tomtom-one-...us-canada-on-sd-card/q/loc/111/203884180.html

something that'll help you not get lost in the woods and get eaten by hungry bears :p
hmmm, def something to consider for sure. you don't happen to know what he has?

seems like all the new pda's are really phones too...I don't need a phone, camera or anything like that
simple is ok so long as it's accurate. I was looking at a Siemens/Fujitsu model but the reviews said it was slow...I hate the slow!
psp is out of my $ I think

I have a Garmen etrex which I use for hillwalking etc. A brilliant bit of kit, but no substitute for a map, compass and a bit of know how. It cost me about £130 a few years ago when I bought it, but you can now get the same attractive yellow version for about £90 ($180).

I wish I could remember the brand name; there's one in the $450 range that GoodHouskeeping was saying works well. I read an article in that magazine at the doctor's today, and apparently some of them tell you to make U-turns in the middle of busy streets and that sort of thing. I was going to try to remember the name of the good one because my husband wants a GPS, but I just can't remember it. :(
