Turkey orders YouTube blocked

A journalist watchdog group criticized Turkey on Thursday for ordering a ban on accessing the video-sharing Web site YouTube because of clips that allegedly insult the country's leaders.

A court in the eastern city of Sivas on Wednesday ordered the country's telecommunications company to block access to the popular Web site because of a video insulting Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, as well as President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the army.

It was the second time Turkey has blocked access to YouTube, which is owned by Google Inc. In March, the site was blocked for two days after a complaint that some clips insulted Ataturk. The ban was lifted after the offending clips were removed.

"Blocking an entire Web site because of a few videos is a disproportionate measure," the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said. "We urge the authorities to reverse this decision."

The site could be accessed on Thursday, and it was not clear when the ban would come into effect.

But the bans highlight Turkey's shaky record on permitting free expression.

It is illegal in Turkey to insult Ataturk, a revered figure whose portrait hangs in nearly all government offices.

Several prominent Turkish journalists and writers -- including Nobel literature prize winner Orhan Pamuk -- have been tried for allegedly insulting "Turkishness."

We would be in trouble in the usa if they did this. How many sites would be blocked for comments about politicians.

This is crazy - what's even more crazy is that YouTube complied with the Turkish government:

There are so many ways around a block like this, but it's still a pretty crummy thing for the government to be doing. YouTube should hold a contest and award prizes to the funniest mockery of the Turkish president and government.

It looks like Turkey blocked YouTube again.

Last time, Google caved into to Turkish pressure and agreed to censor political speech on YouTube.

Google has completely abandoned their "Do No Evil" goal.

I know this sounds to most of you as an oppressing anti-freedom judgement, however, the fact that Youtube has been warned several times before this ultimate decesion was made, and that Youtube has double standards with their policy regarding this sort of events, i believe it is a decent decesion. Every website, no matter how huge they are, has to respect laws and individual rights, they can be shut down or fined for violating laws in the US, in Turkey they can't be completely shut down as they don't operate from here, but they can be blocked, and this is what it is.

In this case, it's the laws which do not respect individual rights.

The government of Turkey is stomping on individual rights and Google/YouTube is helping them.

Well, well, freedom of speech is in danger again. Someone please call SuperMan... lol

I think a government who imagines they can control the internet is a fool. No one can control the internet. This is yet another useless law. Turks will find a way to bypass the ban.

If Turkey wants laws like that, it's their business, and Google/YouTube is right to comply with them if they value the Turkish market long term.

I'm just glad I live in a country where we still have freedom of speech and expression :).
