Now I got dengue fever!

I went to the Dominican Republic for a week with my wife and must of got bit by an infected mosquito in the first couple of days because the last couple of days it started with the painful eyes. We visited our oldest son on those last couple of days which happened to be in the hospital due to dehydration caused by - you guessed it - dengue fever.

Now most of the stories I here it lasts about a week. I have been taking care of myself, but not really sleeping, because it hurts a lot.

Anyone else had it here? If so, what has worked for you for quick recovery?

Haven't seen a doctor and don't plan on it unless necessary.

Drinking lots of water, green tea and taking vitamins, etc...

    Have you had it?

Not that I have heard, unless it is the bad form of the virus where I get internal bleeding.

So far I got a slight bloody nose (blowing too hard.. LOL) and it healed right away so I don't think my platelet count is low enough to be an issue.

If you have some info that tells me otherwise, please let me know.

I had a guy working for me in Central America and he had it bad for a couple of weeks. I brought him to a doctor and that seemed to help.

A bunch of people died from that when it first came here. Get to a doctor.

careful... you are going to be weak for close to 6 months. Never had it but have lived in Venezuela and the Virgin Islands for extended periods where dengue is indemnic. Not that big of a deal other than the inconvenience and feeling like cr*p. You dont want to get it a second time.

    Treatment

Acetaminophen products are recommended for managing fever. Acetylsalicyclic acid (aspirin) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (such as ibuprofen) should be avoided because of their anticoagulant properties. Salicylates (e.g., aspirin) should be especially avoided in children due to the association with Reye syndrome. Patients should be encouraged to rest and take fluids. Warning signs of progression to severe disease include abrupt change from fever to hypothermia, severe abdominal pain, prolonged vomiting, and altered mental status (e.g., irritability, confusion, lethargy). Prompt treatment of DHF with intravenous fluid can improve patient outcomes. In such cases, hospitalization with close monitoring of vital signs, fluid balance, and hematologic parameters is indicated, as well as additional supportive measures.

You need to check your platelets from time to time. My sister had a dengue fever month ago.

I will get the test if I see any sign of worsening. I am actually already feeling a little better, the pain (break-bone fever) is less, but still no fever except maybe mild fevers when I sleep at night. I say that because I wake up feeling like I had a fever, but I am not hot??

My son's platelets had got as low as 139,000 when we were visiting him but that isn't enough to cause internal bleeding.

I don't see why people think doctors are the cure though??

Yeah this disease doesn't have a direct drug for cure ..... however still living under doctor supervision is must.

I think that's the reason why you get injections before you go overseas :p Anyways, take care.

Didn't know there was one for dengue?

We will be moving with our 5 younger children to the Dominican Republic and I am not really for shots, but I need to weigh out which ones might be necessary for us coming from such a sterile environment compared to many countries.
