Should the US be the "World Police"?

Discussion in 'Politics & Religion' started by WebdevHowto, Sep 13, 2007.

Just a fun question to stir up a bit of debate. I for one think the US needs to stay out of the affairs of other nations unless there is a direct threat to the homeland. What is your opinion? Should the US be the "World Police"? If so, what would you have the US do next?

I'm trying to read through the lines here on your post. So what I'm getting is you think a single nation should be the "World Police" and the US is the one that should do it?

I think one nation should lead. And that nation should be the United States of America. Of ALL the nations in the world it has proven itself to be the most trustworthy (or the least evil-this note is for the left leaning loonies)

Calling everyone that disagrees with you a loon instead of having a sensible rational debate doesn't exactly make you look like a genius.

Ideally there should be no world police but this is reality and we live in a pretty scary world. I live in Canada and IMHO if there has to be a country to police world affairs, and unfortunately I think there does, then I cannot think of a better option than the US.

I have learned a long time ago not to argue with fools. The Bible says to criticise a wise man and he will become even wiser. It says not to criticise a fool because he will hate you. Hope you see my point. I intend to argue with rational people only.

Thanks for the welcome. Having lived under communism in Eastern Europe, it is very easy for myself to be a big fan of USA (and a big fan of reason/logic). I remember reading the testimonies of many folks imprisoned under communism. One of their greatest hopes was: "When are the Americans coming?" That was the first question they used to ask whenever a new person was thrown into jail. I never went to jail under communism (a cover up name for dictatorship) but let's just say I tasted "socialism", and it makes me love capitalism even more.

And for the other question about US being the world police, I think US should support Israel and every ally it has and that should show all the rest of the world: "We better make the US our ally and not our enemy." And one thing US should do is make it compulsory that every kid in school learns history and make sure those kids know what price many Americans paid so they (today's generation) can enjoy the freedom they have today. BTW, I don't live in US. I entered the green card lottery so God willing I will call US home soon. I already visited US 7 times (and still hoping for more).

Interesting story, PD. I served in Germany in 1984-1985. One of the first things we did in country, was take a tour to Berlin to see the "wall."

Your story reminds me of this article that had little visibility in the press:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/09/10/wirq10.xml
Hope you get to come here soon. It's not perfect, nothing is...but it's not as bad as *some* would have you believe. There are some here who simply cannot appreciate what they have and how good they have it.

Sorry to hear you had to live with communism, I could not even imagine what that is like. Good luck on the green card lottery!

You mentioned the US support of Israel, what is it about the US supporting Israel that you like?

Also, if the US acts as the "World Police" what would you have it do next?

This could be a fun topic, lets try and keep it clean for a couple pages at least without any name calling or personal attacks to see where it goes.

Most of his thread topics are constructed to be pleasing to the AGS types. Was just doing a search of the forum by his username to see all the posts he's started. Think I'll turn on Home Improvement now. If I must watch a tool, I prefer it to be a Binford tool.

Communism in eastern europe was good for cheap beer as long as you kept your mouth shut. A beer was 60 pfennig in East Berlin and the subway cost me something like 10 rides for 2 marks and I was making like 600 ost marks a week just before the wall fell.:D

That's a good article Gtech. But it's good only for those who have the power to reason. By the way, that is a mighty cool avatar you got. One thing dissapointed me this year: on the way to US I stopped in Honolulu. I went to visit the Pearl Harbour memorial and I was excited to get some full on, patriotic American T-shirts. Sad part was when I got there there weren't any for sale. America may not be the best country in the world but it sure beats the one that comes second. I am already planning for the next holiday. Your tour of the Berlin wall may have given you an indication of what communism is like but again, you only get the real feeling if you were one of those who had to live with it on a daily basis.

Webdev: I like that US is supporting Israel with weapons and moral support. However, I don't think US is going far enough. I am not the greatest mind: but what I would do is stand up to the iranians. That would be my first priority. I would make it PERFECTLY clear Israel is a valuable ally and as such I would not hesitate to take action against anyone that threatens Israel. I think we need the Israelis so we can take Iran out. But yeah, my first priority would be an awe and all attack on Iran. Let's get it over with swiftly.

Wrong guess. One of my great grandfathers was Turkish, though Turkey is not where I was born. Also Turkey a muslim nation has a very strong alliance with Israel. You know why the Turks allied themselves with Jews and not with muslims? Because the Jews can be trusted, while the muslims brothers cannot. I reckon Turkey made a wise choice. I am not Jewish. I am a Christian.
