Site Webshots

Sites like www.webshotspro.com take a "picture" of your site based on a URL and transform it into an image. It is very usefull to make sites thumbnails like the one seen on Alexa or some directories.

Does anyone have a clue on how this is done?

    I suggest using this service.

    http://webthumb.bluga.net/

This functionality will likely be built into PHP in some future release but as far as I know it's not working yet.

Probably a pice of software like a browser that will parse the html, and when it's loaded, take a screen shot. This screenshot will be processed into a smaller thumbnail image and saved in their database along with the url.

This won't be a simple php script on their servers.

An explanation is hard to find from the link I posted (two obscure links away) so I've tracked it down - http://blog.joshuaeichorn.com/archives/2006/07/18/webthumb/

    Essentially Synchronium is correct though.

Very interesting Streety, the link you sent gives some clues and it seems like Synchronum was right when saying that you would need browser capability on the server to do it... Seems heavy!

    Thx!

I saw this at one point that would run on a server w/o a graphics card etc..

    http://www.boutell.com/webthumb/

I looked into it, but decided it was more involved, than I wanted to get into at the time.
