Expired PR domain...Lets be honest

Discussion in 'Directories' started by Grumps, Sep 12, 2007.

I dont get it how theres are so many people out there buying expired PR domains with some weird names and immediately install them with some directory script "Wow i have a PR5 directory".. The stupid part is, people do fall for it... Look at "Solicitations & Announcements" section, its flooded with these offers and people do fall for it as if they are getting some free gold giveaway. Some even launch bid directories and manage to land themselves $1000 or so?

    ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Is there really so much people out there to be fooled?

Save both your time and money, dont bother submitting your sites in those directories.

i dont think a dropped domain goes to $1000 on a bid dir, but it certainly bumps up the sale price over at sitepoint...

One can only assume that the Solicitations & Announcements section of DP is what drives this deceit.

Maybe adding a moderator just for that section to spot out these type of acts and put an immediate ban and closing of the thread will help a lot? No?

I don't agree with the directories with stupid names, though personally I have one directory that was expired with PR (that has a name you can pronounce) that I have also marketed as a web directory. I am not too woried about it losing PR as the original site was kind of in the same market anyways.

I don't know if it is worth moderating. How do you judge whether or not the new directory owner will do a good job promoting their dropped domain from those who just take the money and run?

    You can't.

I find that in website marketing that I have an infinite amount of places that I can promote my site - but in the end, I choose how I spend my time marketing my sites.

It really depends on the directory owner. If it's someone that has owned a directory/directories in the past and I know him to run them well, then I have no problem submitting to a new directory (with expired PR or even with PR0 for that matter).

Long story short, just watch out who you do business with.

People that announce PRX directories on dropped domains are scammers and cheaters.

If you are not trying to fool anyone then you should mention (clearly) that it is a dropped domain.

There is one guy in particular that did a whole bunch of these and was flipping them over at sitepoint, bragging in his auctions about the featured and site-wide links he has sold to unsuspecting folks over here at DP, the guy still has tons of reputation so I guess most people don't mind being ripped off.

    Agree in 100 %.

    What is fun 1:
Even when we show prooves of real directory value - such owners pretend they do not know what's going. Their intention is very clear.
If really want to run valueable directory - they would mention about current domain status, no doubt.

    What is fun 2:
Even warned - naive people still pay and submit their websites to worthless resources.

I think it's time we should start avoiding this approach.

What I am trying to say is, sure with free submit you are not loosing money but you are helping (in a way) hem/her to cheat others.

Such a directory will go paid in few days after "promotional" offer and people who still don't know where they should be submitting, will be trapped after seeing other good sites listed in there.

Most of such sites will be sold as "establish" directories in SP.

The very few people who actually do promotion and take things serious don't mind telling the truth about their domain. It's time for us to get a wider look of few things.

well, in some seo forums they will tell you that it is pointless to submit to directories anyway. It is all about your experience and what is working for you. Honestly I've submitted to well known directories with PR7 and PR6 and it didn't help to my ranking at all - and then when I submitted to PR5 ex-domain without back-links it really boosted my ranking for that keyword.

So it is not black and white...

The cheap featured links on dropped domains don't catch me out one bit... However if its advertising as free then i don't care. Its still to be noted that those threads with dropped domains advertised as pr 5 or whatever do get a lot more attention than they should.

I always ask if its an expired domain or what whenever I see a directory with a strange domain name.

But I think the directory owner should let people know that his/her directory is on an expired domain. Saying like, "PR5 directory" in the title is just misleading.
