It's official Google has opened up a can of whoop ass on directories

How can so many people miss the point

Google is not saying paid links are evil

They are saying paid links that pass PR are evil

Many directory owners here state they offer a great service to their customers, if this is the case, PR should be not an issue. Directories should always be based on driving traffic to a website, nothing else.

The good thing about current issues are, directories that simply use PR as their driver, well these will be banished and quickly. The directory owners who did not base their directories around PR, these will be fine. In fact they will move up the rankings quickly as others move down.

My own directory has shot up the rankings in the past 4 days.

    Exactly - good post.

Google has no problem with directories - I'll say it again- it has a problem with ANY site that "buys" PR in order to "sell" that PR for a higher price.

AND - targetted traffic with good conversion will ALWAYS be king :)

    PS

Again - I got another "anonymous" red rep for this with the comment "we want you in the reds" - LOL LOL LOL - is the "we" the rampant PR gamers I wonder

Well - I could not give a shit about the red...................................................

Because their eyes are selective on which words they read...

In many cases I think they have read the first line of someone post and then added speculation to fill in the rest of what was written in order to save time. Which, of course is costing more then time in the long run.

It's really not that hard of a notion to follow....some just refuse to look any deeper then GOOGLE | PAID LINKS | PENALTY *shrug*

Which I guess on at least some level is good for other folks (such as yourself) :D

Are we going around in circles on this thread or going for some kind of record?

Going for a record I think. So let me throw in my two cents (2 pence for our UK friends).

Google is coming down on sites that sell PR.

You can argue all you want that it's not fair, or "I sell traffic", until you're blue in the face. G has decided that if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck.... it's a duck. :)

Maybe it's not just Paid Links that caused the penalty.

I noticed this a few weeks ago which ought to be a red flag to Google:

    http://www.alivedirectory.com/

    Sites they recommend :

http://www.alivedirectory.com/Blog-Directory/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)
http://www.bigweblinks.com/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)
http://www.webdirectorylist.com/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)
http://www.cdhnow.com/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)
http://www.premiumdir.com/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)
http://www.linkverve.com/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)
http://www.freewebindex.com/ (doesn't show up #1 for own name)

Now isn't it odd that everyone in this group they link to from their home page doesn't rank for their own name anymore?

Every one of these sites links to almost all the others from their home page and the more you check the more sites are involved in this. Looks like a link scheme to me.

Google has warned sites to not get involved in triangular linking schemes. Why not Octagonal? Or call it a Multi-faceted Linking Schemes, or whatever.

If Google devalued all the links involved in this linking scheme on all these sites, if they didn't have enough other links to offset this devaluation, then of course their rank would drop.

Exactly. That's part of what I have been saying.

Interlinking plus paid links = manipulation of PR.

So why is anyone surprosed that Google took action?

It doesn't matter who owns them, although the practice of interlinking among directory owners is pretty blatant.

If memory serves, Shoemoney got hit for excessive interlinking of his sites a year or two back. He owned them all too.

Hypothetically, if directories cease to pass PR, what would that "genuine service" be that you refer to? Traffic? Not likely. I'm listed in tons of directories. Here's a partial listing of my website's unique visitors for the past month:

    • Less than 200 unique visitors from directories
    • 26,000 uniques from the top 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and MSN)

Seriously, do you know anyone who is submitting to directories primarily for traffic?

Amit, did you delete your post where you've pointed out this thread where you have attacked Shoemoney?

Ahhhhh. So now we have paid links, interlinking with multiple sites and those are mirror sites to boot--all owned by the same person.
