there will never be a end to these type of industries. look at the tobacco industry, the fast food industry, the meat industry, the drug industry, the alcohol industry.

I am seeing a lot of directories that are not affected by this that have paid reviews, paid inclusion. What I do not see on these sites or on forums their owners talk on, is the mention of PR as a reason to get linked there. I scrolled thru pages of this thread and noticed a number of people whining about getting raped displaying avatars showing the PR of their directory, sig links with the PR of their directory, etc.

Google has "never" been subtle about telling us not to advertise links based on PR value. Think guys and gals.

You just named some great industries that feed us and keep us alive/happy?... Booze saving tons of marriages and keeping procreation possible.

Unbelievable.. go read up on your Karl Marx. Directories serve as the white/yellow pages of the net, Google even runs one. Those bastards starting small businesses and another BUSINESS that got peeved because its algo doesn't base on content like they say , but rather the backlinks.

    Sigh....

Coming from a text link "broker" like you, that's amusing and typically hypocritical.

Whats wrong with the ones we got?

OH... you mean one that's OK with paid links, link farms, and doesn't mind all that much when they are manipulated?

Hey you might have a point there about the backlinks stating something about the PR. I am noticing my directory is not ranking for it's name and I had some backlinks saying PR5 Web Directory, but if that is that case you could just submit or buy a couple of links for your competitors and get them axed from the SERPs. But maybe there was some sort of tweak done that triggred it? Food for thought.

Google is supposed to give you the most accurate results according to them. This would of course be based on the most accurate content vs, your search.

    Nope.

Not based not on H1 tags and content. Based on backlinks.

Now they're punishing directories...why?...The whole system is based on a free market. By supplementing directories I expect my search for lesbian porn results to be stuffed with straight Asian porn due to this Google vs directory crap.

    BS.

I'm an American who understands God, guns, booze, and free market damnit.:D

As I'm sure you know, Google uses a large number of factors in addition to backlinks/PageRank to determine their rankings.

    They do use content.

They do use <H> tags although recent suggestions are that <H2> is valuedf more than <H1>, presumably because of overuse of <H1> tags by webmasters. They also pay some attention to <B> or <strong> tags and to a lesser extent <I> or <em> tags.

So you're saying selling or buying links based on PR is ok to improve your rankings in Google?

    No. He's saying the opposite.

Although he is or was in the business of selling links based on PR himself (either textlinksbrokerage or textlinkbrokers, I can nenver remember) - hence, my comment about hypocrisy.

Still behind the times eh Minstrel? I sold that site years ago and moved on to much bigger things.

Hypocritical would only apply if I was still a text link broker. Showing the fact that all these directories had been advertising PR as the main reason to get linked has nothing to do with my old business model.

Then maybe your "much better things" should be your profile page instead of TLB.
What happened? You repented and got baptized by Matt Cutts?

I don't think it was much of a tweak, more than a handjob. That is just my opinion. Google would not want too much collateral damage if they could avoid it, and based on that "assumption", I would say it would not be hard to do some creative searches thru their own index looking for obvious links for PR listed on websites, and troll the webmaster forums and just see who is advertising their own directories there based on pr in sigs and avatars.
