    I see #1 directory.google.com

I don't think it comes up to the merit.

    What do you think?

So does Yahoo & DMOZ too. Googles own site at the top is not a big surprise for me. ;)

the fact si that dmoz and yahoo probably dont have anyone actually assigned to develop or approve links where as google probably does.

credit where credit is due google are pretty good at things when they start it.

plus as it is google.com they always put their own propositions on the first position.

the same if you type in groups etc etc

100% incorrect. Both Yahoo and DMOZ DO have editors that "develop or approve links", while Google simply uses a dump of the DMOZ data for their version of the directory. Google does not maintain it's own directory (yet).

In that case google.com should rank #1 for the keyword "Search Engine"

How many people search for that keyword ? I, for one, have never searched for that keyword in my internet life.

As for the topic, we may not always agree with Google's rankings. But in the end, they run and decide which site comes at the top, we don't....

Is'nt the Google directory just duplicate content? It's a DMOZ clone.

I think Google likes sending itself traffic. Are all the youtube serps you see the most relevant results as well?

Actually, I ran that search quite a bit when researching second-tier PPC and also when trying to find a search with better results. Sadly, I never found an alternative to Google.

On "Web Directory" what really annoys me is #3...who the hell wants to read a wiki article on directories? Wiki's dominance of Google is even more annoying than G putting its own properties on top.

Since G is the source of SERPs, its reasonable to assume they are on top when they want to be. If not in the organic search, then through Adwords.

I agree. The current algo places way too much importance on wiki. If you want the definition of something, you would look up a bloody dictionary, not google it.

Not everyone that is searching the term 'Web Directory' is looking for a place to submit a site. Some are probably looking for a definition, more general information, etc... and Wiki can provide that.

No, they do not have to purchase blog posts. They would write them themselves :)

Some crappy old video (youtube) ranks #6 for search on "shoes".
Google must have invented maps, webmaster tools, analytics, mail, checkout, etc. so thats why they rank #1 for those lol.

just my jealous side coming out....

I agree. Wiki's position in the SERP is way too high, IMO.
