Pretty much all of the Dmoz listed directories have been hit badly, I wonder if there is anything in this?

When we do any changes in our directory, our first step would be to announce or tell people that we have changed something. I don't know and don't understand why google does not do this. Google is a big company and when they make any changes to algo or to anything they should tell us before they change. We agree on some points by google but it's totaly wrong to penalize without any notification or without telling the fact.

Google can not handle that. Way too many websites exist and indexed. They are in fact even slow to crawl them sometimes, much less checking on the change/evaluating sites for a report.

I wouldn't worry about this. These directories would probably come back again.

A lot of directories that shared many links in common seemed to be affected.

This is key. Did they update the PR in the google directory? Google directory updates allways come before a PR update.

not really. loads of bid directories didnt get punished like mine.

I was referring to the sites that have problems. Many of them share links in common. I didn't say that was automatically the reason, but it could be some sort of "chain effect".

MAN!!! I can't believe all these people are throwing their hands up. I have been taught by all you directory owners (good ones I might add) that Google fluctuates at times and not to worry. My directory went "missing" as well a few days ago. I was not worried as I learned from you guys. My directory is back without loosing a night sleep.
You should do the same and do not worry. I'll bet you $10 Aviva gets back as the others will as well. We should just worry about providing a great directory service and everything else will be back to normal!

Possible. I noticed many of those which didn't get affected like ask-dir, romow, gii.in, dirsurfer avoid high bids in bidding directories.

here's a thought - Regardless of whether we (directory owners/webmasters) like or dislike Matt Cutts or Rand Fishkin, does it make sense to insult, antagonize, and provoke them?

I'm not suggesting that we all just bend over and take it...but it might be wise to be a little more professional with our comments.

You can bet that BOTH read this forum and calling them names probably doesn't help anyones efforts.

This is day one of the "new changes", maybe we should give it a week or two before nicknames like "corrupt scumbags" are handed out w/o hard evidence that these directories have infact been hand picked and penalized.

Aviva will be back, probably tomorrow. Google has the difficult job of separating the trash sites from the credible sites.

For every directory that gets penalized there will be another directory that moves up in the rankings, my directories are ranking higher than ever today.

Sorry to see this happend. I believe that buying the really high pagerank links (accessify.com/) pushed it a bit too much.

Hopefully everything will work out for the the best with the web directories that got hurt.

    Good luck to everybody.

Agreed. But I do not think that slamming them for their own domain name is a fair thing to do. The way I see it is that you can't keep slapping google in the face and if you keep pushing then they have no choice but to take action.

The good news is that this will not affect any of those directories in terms of quality as they are now already deemed to be just that. Look at some of the directories of old which have lost their rankings along with pr, yet we still submit to them and count them as quality directories.

I'm pretty sure these directories will still do fine regardless of what happens. Strong directories never die and always survive these kind of storms so there is really nothing to worry about.

As google decides to go after paid links, well the paid directories are their easiest target.

And for those that say you are only paying for a review...

Sorry, but if you have to pay to get your site listed, it is a paid link...

@Educationlinks - Your posts are usually informative and worth reading:) That said, if Google has infact penalized directories then the "I told you so" statement below is in pretty bad form. Right, wrong or indifferent...many have put much effort into their sites
