Interesting....search (using directory name as keyword/s) for any of the three [very] large directories mentioned in this thread and NONE appear number one.

That said, this has happened to my directory before and after a few weeks everything went back to normal. The fact that this is happening to more than one directory is alittle concerning...especially given the visibility/reach of each being "penalized".

I.e. Rand Fishkin (who condones link buying) has bitched about them to Matt and Matt has penalized all of the directories (corrupt scum bags).

its not a case of Google backlisting any list. they don't it regularly to other sites.
But since its happaning to site we are closely associated we see this as a alarming change.
This has happened to my sites in the past and even 2 months ago.
I am sure everything will be back in some 1 or 2 months.
    don't worry.

But don't you think of this point? why Google is only doing this with big directories.

Not only romow, dirsensei is also not affected, and google hasn't touched Peter's and Jude's other directories(like odp.in, weechee.com, dirsurfer, so on). Aren't they buying/selling links ?

i dont think its got anything to do with paid links. Blog posts, directory listings, and on page SEO would make these dropped sites still rank high.

I think Mr Cutts will have some questions to answer if listings don't return to normal. Firstly, paid links were only meant to be ignored, not penalised, and secondly, and this is a big one, if Google is truly about providing relevant results to the searcher as Mr Cutts constantly laments than how on earth can they justify not returning Aviva at #1 for the term 'aviva directory'... it doesn't get any more relevant...

A few interesting weeks ahead I feel...

All of you who are members at Sphinn, go and vote this story:

Make sure it gets some homepage exposure, I can't see the sphinn crowd voting it some how.

yes, i faced this problem, i never visited that site of john chow! and when i searched for it, it was no where! then finally i searched it on yahoo or msn and reached it!

so, it's actually google who will lose at the end, google is attacking a big comunity of directories, and the results won't be all that nice!

there is no proof that google has penalized them why not just wait a few days and see if things return to norm

like many have said things like this have happened before and then they return to normal

There is no proof? The directories are not ranking for there own names what more proof do you want? I just think that the Rand Fishkin thing it is too much of a coincidence, besides this is the most exciting thing that has happened all week.

It's not only the "Big" directories being affected but others as well. Mine, BizFire Directory, is being affected in the same way....it just disappeared.

Also, I have noticed that Google updated their Google Directory for the first time in over 19 months. Don't know want to means or if there is and correlation to all this.
