How do you find a good IDN? (Non-English Language Domain)

Just some ideas here. I have seen a few members post IDNs for appraisal or sale, and I wanted to help out with some resources. The registration of foreign language characters (IDNs) has been going on since 2000. IDNs have sold for $xxx, xxx on various forums and SnapNames. We are not discussing phishing domains, but real words in various languages. They can be monetized using Adsense, Parking, or whatever you want.

    IDNForums explains IDNs succinctly:

So, how does one find a good domain?

    1. Pick your market. Find a country or language group that has internet users. Look at the economy. If the country or language has few users and is impoverished, look elsewhere. If the country or language has a fast rate of internet user growth or a huge online population, you have a candidate.

    2. Find a domain name. Make sure the translation is correct. Online translation tools can be helpful, but always check with other sources. Humans are the best sources.

    3. Check your stats. Does anyone actually search for that word? Are the bids high? If you are trying to sell 'ice to eskimos', you may not have a good fit. Some countries ban and block adult sites (China, etc.). Check trends, bids, traffic estimators, search engines, and google/yahoo images. Ask a trusted friend if you are unsure.

    4. Register the domain. Sites like Enom, DynaDot, and DomainSite allow IDN registration. Japanese (.JP) domains can be registered at JP-Domains. Other ccTLD registrars allow IDN registration (.se, .hk, etc).

    5. Ask for appraisals. Use this forum and/or other forums to request translation help and appraisals. Include statistics if possible. REGISTER the domain before asking for help. If not, someone will steal it after reading your appraisal thread. DynaDot allows IDN registration and a five-day cancellation period. This is nice, because if you find that your translation is incorrect or just plain stupid, you can get your money credited back.

Please feel free to add comments or ask questions. I believe all these links are good. Check them out and enter a new world of domaining....

    Большое спасибо!

How exactly do you type in those IDN's when you're trying to buy them because I seem to get errors whenever I copy them from the character map on my computer..

Depends on the domain. For the most part, just copy and paste from a web site or translator.

For example, I just went to http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=translate and translated 'motherboard' into Simplified Chinese.

I copied the Chinese characters 主板 using CTRL C on my keyboard. This works for any web site, document, or online translator.

I then pasted those characters into the search page at DynaDot http://www.dynadot.com/domain/search2.html.

If the domain would have been open, I would have used a second translator (in this case http://www.google.com/translate_t) to reverse translate the characters and see if it was accurate.

I would then paste those characters into Google or Baidu in quotes "主板" and checked the pages and images. If I see lots of pictures of motherboards and lots of pages, I can be reasonably sure it is correct.

I would then check Overture for that language, if possible. Google for most languages, Yandex for Russian, Baidu for Chinese. I also check US Overture. Then check Google trends.

If I am reasonably confident, I would then register it and then ask for opinions/translation help on various forums.

What is the term you are searching? PM if necessary.

    Goofball! :p

Don't be surprised that most keywords were registered long ago, but you can still find some nice unregistered domain names. I noticed recently that almost all the metals had been registered in Russian, but only the dot coms for most of them. I decided to go after the dot nets (platinum, titanium, bronze, copper, zinc, white gold, etc.). I also found that the terms for stainless steel were open in dot com. Found some other cool ones, too.

Dot Net is a gamble for languages that are spoken almost exclusively in one country like French, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. They use the dot com and ccTLD (.fr, .ru, .cn, .jp) and the dot net is not so valuable. Always go for the dot com first unless it is a super 'premium' term (or you just really want it).

I found снг.net open and just had to have it! It is CIS. If you have no idea what that means, check Google http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Independent_States. That is like having USA.

Burns, .net also works very well for Arabic. I agree that .com has more value than .net, but not for Arabics, IMO. For a random keyword, I would def. get the .com, but if the .net is available in Arabic, I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up. I just got back from the Middle East and .net is really used there. After being in the U.S. for 20 years and being bombarded by .com, it was really different to see a LOT of sites advertised in .net.

Also, when checking overture for different keywords you need to remember that different languages have different overture ratings. For example, an Arabic IDN in US overture with a # of 500 I say is good. Anything over 1000 is really awesome and somewhat rare in the Arabic keywords. But a Japanese keyword should get 30,000+ JP overture to consider it a good domain. ***Remember, this is NOT always true. Sometimes REALLY good keywords have low OVT. I have some sites with low ovt but getting LOTS of hits. One of my sites has an OVT of ~1300, yet gets over 7000 hits/month with it's keyword.

There are also many benefits of IDNs such as easier for natives to memorize, opportunities to get good keyword names in a variety of languages, getting keywords in your own native language, + more that I won't get into and just let people figure out by themselves.

I stopped buying those random ASCII websites + LLLL.com after I found out about IDNs. Was trying to beef up my ASCII portfolio, but there is NO way to get REALLY good keywords like chat, television, etc, without spending $$$$$! With IDNs I have acquired some absolutely AMAZING keywords that are actually making money. The thing is that a majority of the world can't access the IDNs yet due to having Internet Explorer 6.0. Once the full AU (Automatic Updates) of IE7 roll in, IDNs should be very interesting.

I was talking with one guy in the Middle East and he really wanted one of my sites. Offered me xx,xxx on the spot. I refused cause I'm sure this will be worth way more than that in the future. These domains absolutely have a future and started making some really nice PPC change in March 07.

Well, 4:48A.M. and I hope I made a little bit of sense!

Good Point! With languages that are used throughout many different countries (Arabic, Spanish, etc.) the dot Net is better than or as good as a ccTLD.

If the language is synonymous with the country (e.g. French/France, Japanese/Japan, etc) then go after the ccTLD. Dot net is still a good bet. I have .org and .info that get good organic traffic, too (e.g. Vétérinaires.org, UnionEuropéenne.org, TeléfonosMóviles.info , PannaMłoda.info, etc.).

I even have .biz, .cc, and .tv of some tip-top domain names. A top keyword is a keyword.
