The very basic thing that I do to see how competitive a niche is:

Go to http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/ and type the niche's keywords to get an idea, how many times a KW is searched.
    For exmaple
    Wordtracker: online dating 1,170.0 /day
    Overture: dating online 10,592.2 /day

Then go to google/yahoo and type in the keyword to see how many pages are already there. For example for KW Online Dating
    Results 1 - 100 of about 146,000,000 for online dating. (0.16 seconds)
    1 - 100 of about 224,000,000 for online dating - 0.35 sec.

Now you can see how competitive that niche is.
You can also use Wordtracker's KEI index. (I have read about it, never used it).

Ofcourse you would like to make some money from the niche speific website, so you have to find advertisers in that niche and see how much are they paying, Are they paying per lead / sale etc.

    I hope this helps..!!

    http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/

Type in a phrase. If it comes up green for both google trends and searches/day, then it's a winner for the exact match.

Look for those that also have a low (< 20Mil) in the broad match as well.

check magazines also they are a good way of finding niches !
After you search magazines , you still have to do some keyword research to see if the market is saturated !
also check the sites that link to your competitors and also the PPC price for the keywords in that niche !

In addition to the other fine suggestions, I think also finding something that interests you, such as a hobby can be of importance.

If you LIKE a particular topic - its not as hard to work on because you have a natural interest in it anyway.

And if you can develop a reputation/name for being an authority/expert on a particular subject - people will come looking for you to provide them a solution.

Are there any hobbies/interests that you like? Is there a way to create a niche from that?

    Good luck. :)

I've sat on that thing for hours, using every possible combination of words for my subject, and I can't get one that works. It's driving me nuts, because I know there's a key word niche for my topic...I just can't find it.

I feel like I am always the "now, why didn't I think of that" kind of guy. The tips presented here will hopefully help me find my first niche that I can be competitive in. Thanks everyone for sharing.
