Selling irrelevant text links

I've noticed recently that some quick money can be made by offering text links to the many people running cigarette/gambling websites who have more than enough money to throw around.

The problems with doing this for you seem to be that you lose your linking power that any Page Rank you have gives you. What other disadvantages are there to selling irrevant links. I read on an old Matt Cutts blog post that your positioning in Google is not affected, but I would assume this can impact your overall Page Rank if you have too many outbound links not connected with your niche.

Any thoughts? It's easy money but is it worth it?

Irrelevant links going out from your site could be bad for you as far as Google is concerned. I would recommend against it.

The most important thing for SERPs and PR is related sites/content, both incoming and outgoing links. Google is doing a lot more these days to lower the likelihood that your site will rank well in the SERPs if Google deems your site to be "spam".

How fast can you generate pages to keep the money coming in?

If it is a one time thing it probably is not worth it.

It all depends on a variety of things. The number of outbound links needs to be quite high before Google cares. Their webmaster guidelines suggest not having more than 100 links on any one page. However, some SEOs claim that linking to Gambling or adult material may affect your SERP positions.

If you get good enough money, you could try it. Just don't overdo it.

It's tempting to take these offers up for some quick bucks on decent ranking blogs, but I'm really worried about the impact it would have. I don't have anything ranked more than PR4 but I wouldn't want to jeopardise the blogs in any way. Hmm.

Maybe just offer them to similar sites. The problem that Google will have is that blogs can be on a whole range of subjects. Unfortunately, their problem could be our problem.

I would say that if your blog is of a certain genre, then write posts in that genre. You'd earn some extra money, but wouldn't suffer much, if any, wrath of Google.

Do you plan to sell the links on a monthly basis?

Start a couple of new blogs and take the money and run.

Are there really that many people willing to pay for a post on a site that is new? If so, hmmm.

No i don't think people want new blogs. They want links on PR-rank blogs. The sort of money these websites seem to be throwing at bloggers says to me that most bloggers turn them down.

there was a video of matt cutts been interviewed by some american guy after or during a break in the las vegas WMW conferences.

just look at his face as he is asked about blog spam. It was so plain to see that it is a real problem for google to sort that mess out.

The whole point about blogs is all that linking ....

I have blogs that link out way more than regular dreamweaver created content sites. And in much more irratic ways.

Nice I was looking for that video. He has stated a couple of times that linking to non relevant site can hurt your rankings, but I wasn't sure about PR.

Sounds a little sketchy. There has to be some type of penalty. Nothing is free especially money!

If you have many blogs, you could try it on one. Shouldn't hurt the others.

It might be worth making blogs specifically for this purpose. There will always be desperate advertisers out there.
