I have a freeware program (you can find it in my sig), and I want as many people as possible to download it. Once people download the program, I think that they tend to like it. The problem is getting the word out so they download it in the first place. What I've done so far: Used robosoft to submit it to many software directories. Some stumble exchange with my download page. (I think seo would likely be too competitive for my program) For right now, I cannot afford to pay to market this program, so if possible, I'd like free ways to get lots of people to download a free, useful program. Does anyone have any ideas of how to market it?
try hotscripts.com there are also tucows, shareware and other software sites people go there looking for free software to solve their problem.
Do you know any competitive product? If so, type that product into the SE's and see where that product is registered and register your own product there.

After successful testing I think you should go for Press Release before you launch your product. also try to create a user group through joining relevant community.
* Put it on Digg etc. * Spread the word on other forums also. (don't advertise in your first post) * Send it to "exactseek" apps. I don't have that email now, but if they like your software they will mention it their newsletter read by over 100,000 people (that's what they say...) Best of luck
Hi, I also have a freeware(no resell) like you. You said that you submitted with Robosoft. I don't see yours in 1 Cool File. Robosoft is not automatic and you do have to "work" a little with it. My software is on many sites but I do have many that are in the "queue"(hate that) unless I pay or wait. That's why I don't make people wait on my new download site or force reciprocal link. I should but I don't. I did pay on Tucows, Download.com to be included because they are the bigger ones. Make sure to do second check on the pending sites. Some takes a few days/hours. But I do get more downloads since using it.
Go to forums related to certain TV shows -- market that software there. Put it in your signature and market it when possible.
ADD: You simply have to go where your target market is, you have to get out of the mindset of "articles, links, and press release marketing." There are many more options out there. If you have a market to dog owners, go to a forum on dalmatians and start posting there. If you're selling a rare kind of cheese, go to a forum with a bunch of cooks and chefs. You get the idea.
