Ways to Promote Websites

Seems like everyone, their dog, cat, bird and fish are starting blogs and/or websites lately. Lots good stuff and lots of stuff we could do without too. However, putting up a website seems like putting up a sign in outter space. It's never going to get seen. So, I'd like to hear from you folks what you can do and are currently doing to promote your sites so it's not seen as advertising but offering a solution for people with the problem you have the solution for.

In marketing every right person can be successful if he is coming up with right product/service in right time and right place as the old marketing books teachs us. I think you are talking about blog site, if you are asking way to promote it, I would suggest you to create your strong online presence first by visiting few forums like bloggertalk.com, blogdiscussion.com, blogparty.com/blogpeople.

Well you are right that it seems everyone is building sites/blogs these days, and it is annoying. It seems the whole world wants to jump on the net bandwagon looking for treasure.

The reality is most of them will never make it. It is just as tough to make money online as it is to make money offline. What you probably really want to know is how to stand out from all the other noise out there in dot com world.

Well the answer is simple. Differentiate or die. As Apple famously says, you have to think different. Don't go start a website about gambling or porn when there are a gazillion out there. Do something that no one else is doing.

A good example of my own site that is different is www.supernaturalminds.com. Now here is a site dedicated to great geniuses and advanced technology. It is literally an encyclopedia of great minds that are not well known to the general public.

I've checked the SEs and there are hardly any sites out there like that. Start a website in a topic no one has thought of. My advice is to stick with a niche. If you want to build a site in a large established industry, build multiple sites.

Don't forget the power of press releases. If you find an angle to make your website promotion news worthy then press releases can be very efficient.

Right, good press release definitely is going to help you, I would also suggest to get your site listed into the yahoo directory, dmoz and relevant industry related directories as well and try out to get inbond link both in quantity and quality coming into your site.

In my experience it's much easier to make money offline than online.

Yeah, I've just had a perfect example for a good press release, good meaning "good results" here as it was in reality totally un-newsworthy, only got a 3 in rating and was released for free. Still it was picked up by several large websites (3 at least) in the genre of my site and made the traffic jump to about 400% of the average for the last 2 days now.

Well, that's not quite what they say.

Although some might want "different" to perform as an adverb in this phrase, complete with an "ly" ending, Apple and its advertising agency intend it as a fanciful category, just as we might say "Think yellow," "Think change" or "Think playful." (mentioned here)

    /end tangent

You're right though, tesla. Webmasters need to think differently when it comes to a topic.

tweetylover8402 probably already has some sites/blogs set up, so if you've already started a topic and enjoy it, no need to scrap it just because it's not unique enough. Find a way to make it stand out. Always think about how appealing your content is to others. Do you have one article that might a wide audience might be interested in? Try to promote that article to draw people in.

You must find your niche. If you do what everyone else are doing you will fail for sure. You must have something unique about your website. Even if you are marketing a common service or product, try to find a special market for it and build your site with content and resources that focus on this market.

Adwords can be very rewarding if you get a good campaign going but it's quite expensive

Are they targetting surfers or webmasters? I'm looking for a few places to submit press releases / articles that target mainstream webmasters but they seem to be pretty difficult to find
