Google / Dmoz Directory is being updated!

I caught something on the dmoz forum indicating there is updates going on with the google directory.. I have also confirmed this elsewhere. Check:

New sites since the last update are showing and the new PR values are being shown. These are mostly EU servers and it seems it will take a while to fully roll out.

I guess the dmoz/google directory isnt dead at all.

 

Yes I saw that even the EN directory is updated and the DMOZ editor that edited my listing got it misspelled and now i'm getting weird name when I type in google my url :-((((

What was misspelled? The url or description?
I had my description misspelled once, wrote them about it and soon after I could say goodbye to my dmoz listing at all. Some of those editors are quite strange down there. Anyway good luck changing it: D

An easy way to tell which you are looking at...

 

Even in that one, my subcategory still says "Modified by Google - ©2005 Google."

 

Yes, I saw some subcategories that had the older date on the newer sites... I can't find them now.
It confused me. I could not decide if the data was being pulled from elsewhere, or if some categories just did not change, and therefore did not get a new copyright date...

The only difference is a change in the description for 8 to Infinity's link, and PR scoring...
New copyright. I doubt any category was without a change in PR scoring...

I am still listed as an editor in http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/ , so they are obviously not updating. In http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/Business_Services/Fire_and_Security/ I changed the listing for Detection Systems - http://www.detectionsys.com/ which happens to be in my home town. It changed ownership, names, and url years ago. The dead link it still is in there, and the correct one is not.

Sorry, no update - the English version is still outdated and totally useless.

The moral to this story is this - Google does not care about the ODP and proves it by not using it's RDF dump consistently - or even in years. Now, Google spiders the ODP constantly, so getting into the directory will get you a visit by Google, but not to the extent that people here seem to think.

ODP is not the golden cow. If you want to promote your website, do some leg work and you can find easy ways to increase your exposure.

Actually, I think you may have a point there.

The web is changing.

At one time it may have been that people used to browse thru dmoz, but nowadays u actually wonder the following.

'Where would I go if I wanted to find a site'?

And you'll find your answers right there.

I mean nowadays there are so many specialized directories, web 2.0 sites, communities and the search engine war continues where they are constantly working on providing the best results to searchers.


I guess the dmoz or AOL people could settle for dmoz being sort of a search engine shop boy if they wanted to.

You know the one which the technician calls and says, shorty, hand me the wrench, or bring me a flat screwdriver.

But then thats ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of editors building that search engine shop boy.

Agree, i didn't find any much more different before and after my site was listed in Dmoz. I think if you follow the SEO way maybe you traffic will more than traffic from site which be listed in DMOZ and didn't do anything for SEO

Holy Cow... ~~~ One of my sites listed into DMOZ has a PR 4, the same category doesn't even exists in the Google Directory. Is this update going to help me ? if for example my site listed in DMOZ gets exported as well to the Google directory???

Easy answer - never. Google no longer is using the DMOZ directory. When they stopped getting updates a couple of years ago, they we sporadic at best (every 2, 3 months). They have now removed the directory link from their home page.

The thing is, the directory does not need Google to survive, and IMO is better that Google does not use it. There has been a misconception that with Google using the directory, they (the webmasters, SEOs) got better ranking in Google. This, plus the DMOZ opening up submissions (suggestions) from the web community caused undue expectations of the directory being a listing service. This was never the intention of the ODP, and will never be.

 

That's not quite correct. Google has been updating the directory search database at regular intervals for quite a while now. This has been noted in a few threads here before. The current directory update seems to be work in progress, not all Google servers have been updated, so which version you see will depend on where you live.
