Why are comments good for your blog?

    Hi there,

Sometimes I see threads where people are asking people to comment on their blog posts. Apart from making the site look popular, is there any other reason to have comments on your blog? Is there an SEO advantage?

    Thanks :)
    Matt

Well, I would certainly rather have 30 comments under a post from people debating my article than the silence of no posts.

The reasons for that are obvious really - to do so makes your article instantly far more attractive to users because it adds authority to your opinions.

(Unless you are talking complete crap and all 30 posts are dissing you :D)

    * Comments add to your content
    * more comments on your blog means more visitors who take interest in your content and may give some degree of authentication to your content as said above

The blogs with dofollow links in comments are counted as backlinks. They are great resource to get SERP for target keywords.

Comments will make your content --- a fresh content to Google's eyes again.
Fresh content is always a good thing to the SERP's.

The more comments you have the more active your site looks. Noone wants to participate on an inactive blog. By making it look active, you get more commentors and return visitors.

I would say it ultimately depends on what the goals are of each blog posting are, but in general the more content the better. Google will index your site more.

Oh right - so one of the advantages in terms of SEO is that it adds extra content to the site, hopefully which is unique - which Google etc will pick up on?

    Thanks for the helpful replies

What's the tradeoff, though? I'd love to keep adding fresh content to my site (which is why I added a blog to it in the first place) but I am worried that I'll get mega-spam. My site is about the legitimate version of a type of affiliate marketing that is similar to a topic that people often spam about, so I'd be more likely than the average blogger to get spam text/links. While I wouldn't allow HTML code in comments, I still think I'd have to do a lot of housekeeping. What are people's opinions? Does the positive effect on SEO outweigh the overhead of comment maintenance?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet. The primary SEO benefit for comments is that they allow you to get longtail traffic by ranking for keywords/phrases in the comment section.

Here's an related article on long tail keywords.

    Oh right.

If I have a website, is there a way of allowing comments to appear on the site? It's not a blog or anything, but I would like it if people could comment directly on the site.

Would something like this program get noticed by search engines? - http://www.cbox.ws/
If people posted comments here on my site using that program, would my search engine rankings improve at all?

    More comments = More content.

The more content you have, the more google will like you and the more you will get and the more traffic you will get.

Simple, yet absolute - Content Rocks!

People can write comments or messages that appear on the site - would this be picked up by search engines or not?

Jenny. Most blogs have it where the blogmaster has to approve all comments. Therefore; nobody will see any spam. Only comments you approve.
